James Alexander Gordon to retire

James Alexander Gordon to retire

Post by Ben Diesel »

"But first, here are the classified football results, read by James Alexander Gordon."

One of the most distinctive and best known voices on BBC radio for over 40 years is being retired. Following surgery on his larynx, J A G's voice is no longer robust enough to continue with reading out the football results on Saturday afternoon's Sports Report on Five Live.

I shall miss the velvety timbre of his voice, that low growl at the end of the word 'nil', and the way he could not quite pronounce the word 'Wanderers' properly. A broadcasting legend.

Can't imagine anyone else reading the footie results !

Earliest memories of going to footie with my Dad including Constable Alex Morgan and the Met Police band, checking the programme to see what match B was at half time when the kids were placing the numbers in the little scoreboard......and listening to James Alexander Gordon reading out the scores on the radio on the way home in the old fella's Volvo usually starting with Arsenal nil :D

What a shame

They'll probably get some young northern university knob to read them out now.

Yes, I'm looking at you g88ner.

Good luck to this legend in his retirement. Hopefully his recovery from cancer will be swift.

Certainly Saturday afternoons at five will never be the same again.

Great memories indeed, I can relate to all of the above. Shame we can't bring the Met band back.

Shame, I like him!

I was never a fan of Gavin and Stacey but he was good presenting league of their own

This will happen. :banghead: :x

And g88ner will end every fucking broadcast with a little "impromptu" piece about Andy "He's British Now" Murray and sewing!

She is a keen Tottenham Hotspur fan, but years of strict impartiality at Radio 4 should rule out any stifled inflections when reading the scores of their north London rivals, Arsenal.

:cussing:

Well, as there's no transfer news.
