HIGHBURY

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Wonderful stuff (it brought a tear to my eye too but didn't want to be the first to admit it).

There is a great youtube film about the building of the Emirates from the contractors point of view. I am not computer savvy enough to provide a link but if you search Nr 1. Emirates Stadium you'll get it. Over 30 mins long. Well worth watching.

I apologise if this has already been discussed.

Nice one Reb....really enjoyed that. Will never forget my first visit with the old man. He paid me in to the boys enclosure then stewards would open green gate to let you into the North Bank where he,and all the other dad's, were waiting for you and their kids. Can you ever imagine that happening now.....sadly not. Precious memories.

I too went through this rite of passage. I can remember first seeing the Gunners shop in the North Bank just the other side of the gate. Fighting my way to the front and then just staring at all the merchandise (the glossy black and white photos of the players sticks in my mind the most) wondering what to spend my pocket money on.
No replica shirts in those days. I remember circa '72 and my mate wore a home shirt to a game and got some strange looks.

The last few pictures break my heart just as it does every time I walk past the old West Stand entrance. Everyone of my favourite childhood memories sit behind that gated apartment entrance !

Unfortunately, only being 18 never got to see Highbury in person on a matchday . I feel that I have missed out on so much, as I now have to sit in a stadium (although it is a beautiful design) packed full of many passionless "supporters" controlled by stewards disapproving of any noise :banghead:.

It wasn't always the atmosphere that made the place to be honest.......although the Talkshite myth of the Highbury Library was overplayed (a bit like captaincy is in this country :D )......it wasn't always a cauldron of noise. The fact was that it was an iconic stadium and it was ours for 93 years. A combination of our own tube station, the listed buildings, the marble halls....everything really - just a really special place to watch football. I've been there when there was around 15,000 people watching us playing a meaningless second leg of the League Cup 2nd round against Doncaster Rovers and there with 56,000 people plus a few more on the roof of the North Bank against Man U, Liverpool and Everton.

Loved the place to bits.

So glad I took my lad to the last ever game there against Wigan when he was only 5 - he still remembers the whole thing even though at the time he was bored when Roger Daltrey was on at the end and I was in bits :D

Good stuff SteveO.... Highbury played a huge part in so many aspects of my life...my first game with my old man(as earlier), rites of passage in the boys enclosure when went on my own aged about 12 (never happen now) with ''big boys'' all around with sharpened steel combs scaring the shit out of everyone(especially me),bobble hat getting knicked etc etc. Moving on to later years, the gloom of losing at home to Watford with no more than 18/20000 there, protests outside, the solace then later of 50000 plus v Man Utd the day after my fiancee confessed to cheating, the mural during the North Bank rebuild. Then later again the elation of taking my eldest son to his first game(v Sunderland) with the old man (my first 3 generation experience). Wrighty breaking the then record, again with my eldest. In a corporate box, Charlie George came in (friend of the host)...got me a beer! (should have been the other way round). Again against Sunderland, with my second son (his first game), in the West Stand, Sunderland fan in a wheelchair getting escorted out for bad behaviour...funniest thing I've ever seen at football.

Sorry to ramble, but that is how it felt from the young kid to the 40 something I am now.....I f@@@@@@ loved it

If I was born a decade later I'd never have set foot inside... as it was I consider myself truly privileged to have been able to go regularly for 9 seasons, seen some phenomenal games and experienced some unrivalled feelings.

After the Barca game in 2010 stayed at my mate's in Highbury (he lent me a 1-day superfan pass) but had to kick me out at 8 the next morning. Had a few hours to kill before my train so decided to have a wander around the old ground. Brought back some absolutely phenomenal memories with deep emotions seeing where we used to walk and 'The Wall' where we'd have a few cans before the game (provided it wasn't caning down). But seeing the ground was just upsetting and tbh made me feel angry.

I'll never forget the buzz of walking out into the stands at Highbury and seeing the grand old ground with all the colours. Was amazing whatever the game and no matter how many times you did it.

Don't worry about what you may have missed. Oh to be 18 again. When I've long croaked you'll still be going to watch The Arsenal. Whatever we feel about how the club is run now, or modern football in general, I'm sure once the club is back on track with the right attitude you'll have great memories of your own.

I often look to the future and wonder about the great times ahead when I won't be around.
