Re: BERGKAMP 20
I'll always remember my old man phoning me as I arrived home from work. "Turn on your telly," he said. "We've signed Bergkamp." I couldn't believe it. I actually ran around the back yard yelling with the buzz of it. GF at the time thought I was fucked in the head. Turned out she was probably right.
Honestly, after Anfield 89, that was the greatest moment ever in my 44+ years as a Gooner.
The man was the greatest. That goal against the Toon was and is the greatest goal ever scored. The vision, the balance, the touch, the technique, the sheer confidence and balls to even try it.

Watched an Arsenal game shortly after DB10 signed in the Dublin Arsenal Supporters Club.. The consensus from some of the group was that Bergkamp was useless and Platt was the better buy. Couldn't believe what I was hearing, how long had we waited for a world class player ?, and this is what "fans" thought of him. Granted the more level headed members saw it differently and realised that he needed a settling in period not just at Arsenal but in England also.

Great headline on the back of The Sun the day after the signing : 'HELLO KAMPERS'

Seem to recall it was being talked up as a possibility a day or so beforehand but I wasn't wanting to get carried away in case of being disappointed.DB10GOONER wrote:I'll always remember my old man phoning me as I arrived home from work. Found out via ceefax and jumped around the room, punching the air, etc.
Only the Sol signing has come anywhere close to the excitement of capturing Dennis Bergkamp.

A very expensive club call telephone line or ceefax on the tv ( a kind of primitive web page):lol:which was handy for score updates but also had a transfer gossip section - taken from the papers.arseofacrow wrote:How the fuck did you guys find out anything before the internets?

Probably the best player I saw at Arsenal but my favourite is still Ian Wright. Just watching yet again a re-run of SKy's PL100 Club and I can't ever remember a player enjoying his goals and celebrating with the fans as much!!

Don't mind arseofacrow. I've met him, and he's old enough to remember the joys of ceefax!StuartL wrote:A very expensive club call telephone line or ceefax on the tv ( a kind of primitive web page):lol:which was handy for score updates but also had a transfer gossip section - taken from the papers.arseofacrow wrote:How the fuck did you guys find out anything before the internets?

Will always love Wrighty and he was my favourite all time player before we signed DB10. But he is now a close second to The Dennis.I Hate Hleb wrote:Probably the best player I saw at Arsenal but my favourite is still Ian Wright. Also, Wrighty had the best goal celebrations of any player ever. Always with a touch of arrogance and humour that didn't alienate him for me. I know Henry took his record but I never loved TH14 the way I did Wrighty. And I seem to recall even the great Lord Bergkamp saying Wrighty was the most natural goal scorer he ever played with.

Ceefax Porn: Even though one knew the outcome, it was nonetheless a tad frustrating waiting for the page to turn over.
