Nightmare Debuts

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Nightmare Debuts

Post by StuartL »

By all accounts Sczezeseszney had a bit of a mare on his debut for.Roma.

Seem to recall Jenkinson scored a hell of an o.g on his pre-season debut.

Was at Anfield when Parlour gave away a pelanty on his debut.

Can anyone recall any others ?

Didn't Jason Crowe get sent off on his Arsenal debut?

Edit: just checked and it was the fastest ever debut sending off in the football league... 33 seconds

Late 90s came out of retirement to play a one off game as a favour for a mate.
15 mins in, deflect a shot past our keeper.
30 mins...tear my Achilles.
I'd say that ranks as a pretty shit debut!!!

Woodgate for Real Madrid was spectacular.. OG and red card I think..Also remember a kid for Arsenal called John Halls getting sent off v Manure in a League Cup game but not sure it was his debut.

Some old favourites had stinkers of debuts !

Ray Parlour , gave a penalty away and we lost 2-0 @ Liverpool !

Willy Young, had a mare in front of a Hostile crowd as we lost to Ipswich at home 1-4 , the crowd were singing "Get back to Tottenham ".
Willy had been sent of in the away fixture the previous season for violent conduct , he ended up at Highbury a cult figure and was a great man .
I saw him GIVING his West Ham cup final ticket allocation out to fans on the steps of the marble halls ! ! !

That was the one that immediately sprung to mind for me - It was a league cup tie home to Birmingham (we won 4-1 after extra time, seem to recall Boa Morte scored a nice goal, as did alberto mendez or whatever he was called, the German/Spanish person)

Crowe came on as a sub, made one tackle, got a red for it, back off after 33 seconds, dont think he even touched the ball. I think I'm right in saying he never played for the first team again, hard to think of a more disasterous debut than that.

sorry.
It is how John Hartson and Chris Twaddle pronounce 'penalty' - it is maddening.

I’ll cut Hartson some slack as he’s from the principality - but Waddle: my God what a fucking dunce.

I believe Marinez made his debut in the 7-5 League Cup win over Reading ; letting in 5 goals in your first game as a keeper ain't the best start.
