Goalkeeping Situation

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Sadly sums up the last decade in many ways. Talent allowed to develop delusions of grandeur and ultimately going backwards.
Which of course comes back to piss poor management. Why could no-one see it but us? Seriously?? :banghead:

I maintain selling Szczesny was a big mistake. He's a Gooner as well.

Wenger's ego has cost the club in plenty of ways.
Might have been both of their egos that finished him at the club but his form had been in the toilet for so long that many fans were calling for him to be dropped for fabianski.

Sadly sums up the last decade in many ways. Talent allowed to develop delusions of grandeur and ultimately going backwards.
100%. It's hilarious how some fans get this rose tinted view of past players. Chesney was absolute toilet for most of his time with us. The same people say things like "Comedy Eboue wasn't that bad really". Bollocks. He was.

We haven't had a good keeper since the Lehmann arsehole and haven't had a great keeper since Seamo.

And why are people ignoring the fact that Szczesny was brilliant on loan for 2 years at Roma and managed to bench a world class goalie in Allison?

Perhaps the GK coaches at Roma were competent unlike Wenger's lot?

I'm convinced Szczesny would be successful under Emery and Javi Garcia (the new GK coach).

Unfortunately Juve will reap the rewards after we spent years developing him and letting him make his mistakes in an Arsenal shirt.

Always thought Scez was a decent keeper who won us more points than he cost us!
Let down by poor coaching and poor man management when he needed to be disciplined!
Had a terrible tournament for Poland around same time his Arsenal career was on the slide!
Wouldn’t want him back but we could do a lot worse !

He's not the automatic number 1. Will fight it out with Szczesny.

What caused Chesney's career to go to shit with us was his arrogance sid. It got to a point with him where you'd see him in the tunnel before a game and if he had that stupid cocky grin on his face you just knew he was gonna have a mare and he inevitably would.

It's too easy to blame every player's failing on Wenger. Some of them just were not good enough. Chesney was never a great keeper and was only seldom even a good keeper. He had a sprinkling of potential when he first came into the team and that quickly evaporated. Keepers more than any other position are judged more on their errors than anything else and the top Keepers minimise the errors in their game. Chesney like Flappy Almunia and Ospina were and are not top Keepers. Never were. Never will be.

Also - and this isn't aimed at anyone just a general comment - this love in with Chesney because he once said a few things that made him sound like a fan is embarrassing tbh....

I thought he was getting the GK coach that he had at PSG. Sure it was in the papers a while back.

So no truth in the rumour that SK wanted Bob Wilson to do the job part time on the cheap
