Genuinely fearful for what this weekend could bring in terms of a second spike - one only needs to look across the pond at all the parties at the end of May to understand why hospitalizations have soared again and the rate of infections are more than double what they were a few weeks ago

I hope all of those who just say "open everything up" feel it was all worth a paddle in the sea, a pint in the pub and a chicken tikka massala when their parents or grandparents are on a ventilator and they're unable to visit them

All feels too soon for me. The scientists were predicting that the first date when we would declare zero deaths from coronavirus would have been the 31 July.

Surely we all could have waited an extra couple of months. In the scheme of the worst recession in living memory and the worst pandemic for 100 years would two months more without a haircut or a pint in a pub really be such a drama? Most of the accumulated debt will be written off anyway......

Seems like one of the best boozers near the Emirates agrees with you mate. I won't be going near a pub for a long time because of a health condition but even if I was younger and healthy I still wouldn't sit in a pub, knowing that even if I don't get ill I could make someone else in my family/friends very sick.
Fair play to the guy - must be crippling his business, but it absolutely is the right thing to do. I don't like joining in with the general Government bashing that goes on, but there really should have been some sector specific relief for some of these industries which would have prevented this. Look at the redundancies now being drummed up when the Government have likely been paying 80% of their wages for the past few months. If they'd have paid 100% for sectors like hospitality, and 50% for some sectors who were working to a reduced level throughout, I think more pubs and restaurants would (a) have been saved and (b) not feel the need to rush open again

Just hope there's a day when we can all have a pint in the Tollington or one of the other local pubs safely again

whatever people do this summer there is very unlikely to be a second spike.
the concern is that there could well be come the autumn when this virus gets mixed in with the annual flu season, as well as the virus lingering longer in the darker, colder conditions and the fact that people will be inside a lot more.

the question we all should be asking is how prepared are we for this winter ?
I would say not very well.

Pretty much every other country in Europe has got this far more under control now with only a handful of deaths each day, whereas we are still seeing about 100 dead every day. It hardly inspires any long term confidence. The only way the country will get on top of this virus is to have an effective test, track and trace scheme and we appear to be incapable of this.
There seems to be an assumption that 2020 is a right off yet somehow miraculously we are all going to get back to normal next year. How ?

This isnt about the government getting things right but the general muppet populace so we're fucked, easing lockdown is only partly about the economy no matter what the BBC etc want you to think.

We need to get used to putting up with this Virus and living along side it, the only way to do that is to get people out and about again but in as safe a manner as possible, this needs to be done sooner rather than later to make sure people are as prepared and switched on as possible before Winter and the flu season begins.

Much as we want a vaccine and I hope to God one comes along soon it may be years or never before one is developed, or even similar to the flu where it constantly has to be adjusted due to virus mutations. No one can sit on their arse until a vaccine comes along because there will be no money to pay for it to be produced by then.

This isnt a political thing, it is a virus, it affects, Democrats, Socialists, Communists, Republicans, Capitalists, Facists, Neo-Nazis whatever the fuck people call themselves the exact same, putting a political spin on it is meaningless and childish and just means more deaths, job losses, companies going bust etc etc etc with no purpose other than for idiots to win points....its sickening if I'm honest.

Agree with both of ye, but the reality is that we are letting in plane loads of yanks into the country without a care in the world  :censored: :censored:

The Irish people can follow every instruction to the letter of the law, but what difference will it make if we are importing more cases of the disease anyway ? People working in the hospitality/tourism sector such as hotels, restaurants are being put at risk cos of the financial motives of their employers and the government  After the initial backlash there have been a few (not enough) businesses which have refused to accept american tourists into their premises, but the reality is that it shouldnt be down to the business people or the regular joe to police a situation which should be shut down by the government

Work with some hypocrites. One bloke has been so vocal about the employer not caring etc , yet he had no problem admitting drinking in a pub with the "phantom receipt " in his pocket..The phantom receipt is where a publican /barman gives a receipt for €9 or more for food that was never bought or consumed on the premises to customers. This "receipt " validates the customers entitlement to be on the premises if there is a visit from authorities.

They are looking at allowing some spectators to attend sporting events in October.Does that mean we are going to have social distancing football hooligan s meeting in a car park s standing 2 metres apart giving it the "come on" and throwing air shots before jogging on home.

So, it has been established the England have been miss reporting the covid-19 death figures. Apparantly, the way they were recording it, was anyone who recorded a positive covid-19 test, then has since died, it was recorded as a covi-19 death. Meaning, you could get a positive test without showing symptons, recover, go about your business get hit by a car two months later and it will be a covid-19 death in England. No conspiracy, exactly how it has been reported overnight. We've been fooled and manipulated people.
