I found this clip:
"Arsenal have developed a habit this season of confounding critics and opponents by fielding an unfamiliar-looking side in important matches, and picking up points.
The charm may be called upon tomorrow when they play Birmingham. Several changes are anticipated, and if these "surprise" tactics work again, Arsenal will await their first victory for five weeks."
This seems familiar, except that the backs were chosen from Male, Hapgood and Leslie Compton! Copping was doubtful, so Collett could come in at "left-half". Kirchen was doubtful so Nelson could come in at "outside-right". Bryn Jones returns at inside-left (displacing Leslie Jones!) and Bastin is on the left wing in place of Cumner.
The article is from the Daily Herald, December 2, 1938. We beat Brum 3-1 but ended the season in only 5th place. Brum were relegated (there's a surprise) and T. Crapspur were not even in the same division as us.
Think on Arsene!
