Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is closing in on a deal to land Roma central defender Matteo Ferrari at the end of the season.
The former Everton man has been watched closely by Arsenal scouts this season and Wenger is said to be impressed with what he has seen of the man who spent two seasons on loan at Goodison Park earlier in his career and is keen on making a return to the Premiership.
Wenger could even make a personal check on the 27-year-old Italian international when Roma face Manchester United in the Champions League next week.
Roma are believed to be prepared to do business at around £5million which is well within Wenger's budget for next season so he is likely to make up his mind whether or not to move for the player before the end of the current Premiership campaign in May.
