Any runners on here?

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

7.7 miles..........1hr 6min 47sec
Warm/cool, cloudy/sunny, rain/dry. Pretty much every kind of weather except snow ffs!

Average 8.67min/mile

Todays top tip:- More of an observation/moan really. My right knee has been playing up for a while, getting painful at around the 5-6mile point. I've just been sucking it up really and getting on with it.
But last saturday I took my 7year old and his mates out and did a few sprints. 50 - 100 mtrs. (They were on their bikes, the little feckers!). Ever since my knee has been quite painful and now my right ankle has started going the same way.

Dont really want to stop running to see if it recovers as I've built up somewhat of a routine/momentum. Mentally and physically (apart from my knee and ankle) I can handle the runs pretty well. I feel that if I stop for any amount of time, a few weeks maybe, I may find it very difficult to get motivated/going again.
So although having a break may benefit me physically. Mentally it could be a problem.
Sooooooooo I might have to reduce the distances and take things slower for a while. Not ideal but somewhat of a compromise.....

My top tips for you mate:

1. Slow it down a bit. A lot of pressure on the joints and people can cope at different levels.

2. Find some specialist exercises for the knee. Perhaps you don't have enougj strength in the upper leg and that's the real problem.

3. Look at some vitamins which are good for the joints.

Gonna look into your tip of some tabs for joints and probably reduce the distance and slow it down. Maybe slap on some deep heat type cream too. :)

7 miles..........59min 50sec
Warm, sunny, no rain. Quite nice

Average 8.55min/mile

Left it a week to see if my dodgy knee and ankle would benefit from the layoff. I loaded up on pain killers but after less than a mile I thought I'd have to give up cause my knee started getting quite sore. I stuck it out and completed the distance. Still sore but not too bad. Just have to take it easy.

Mate, if you have actually damaged the cartilage or frayed the outside threads of your ACL or medial ligament you will only do more damage by running, even by reducing distance, intensity, etc. The only thing (if the knee doesn't actually need surgery) that will heal it is rest, and then slow physio type work to build it up again.

This is what Im afraid of. If I do have to have an extended rest then I doubt very much I'll find the motivation to pick it up again.

7 miles...............59min 6sec
Warm, sunny, breezy no rain

Average 8.44min/mile

Have done a couple light 5 mile runs with a weeks interval between them since I last posted to see how my knee and ankle fared.
Today my knee got noticeably more painful after 6 miles but not enough to force me to stop. Ankle was fine. I reckon the ankle problem arose from over-compensating due to the knee pain.

Anyway, onwards and upwards. :barscarf:

7.2 miles...........1hr 2min 14sec
Hot......Just. Too. Hot.

Average 8.64 min/mile

Break of 10 days since my last run and although my right knee still gets sore, it bearable and my right ankle pain seems to have gone. :barscarf: Note to self - Never, ever run in hot weather ever again. Ever! :(
