Now it's the Oscars!

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

Now it's the Oscars!

Post by Rugby Gooner »

Where is all this "political correctness" going to end? Black actors are now accusing the Oscars of being racist because no black actors or film makers have been nominated this year. I also remember a couple of years ago that the B.B.C. was accused of being sexist because no women were nominated for the "Sports personality of the Year.
In both cases bigotry is immediately assumed, rather than possibility that maybe no one was good enough.
Does it mean that I can accuse Arsenal Football Club for being anti white because they never wanted me to play for them? Or was it just because I was never even close to being good enough?
Get a fucking grip! When people fail at things, or don't get what they want, it doesn't automatically follow that the organisation or person that denied you is racist, sexist or "whateverist." Fucking grow up! :banghead:

You do like to get your knickers in a twist mate.

I think you need to leave Rugby and go somewhere tolerant, safe and low crime.

Ever thought about Cologne?

It's worth a comment though.

I watched the news last night and, every person asked, said that black actors should have been nominated, though not a single one mentioned any particular actor whose performance meritted nomination.

If an excellent performance by a black actor was overlooked then we should all be outraged. If, however, the best performances were chosen irrespective of colour, then this is the antithesis of racism. Tokenism is abhorrent.

If there is racism in the film industry (and there probably is) I suspect it is found when films are commissioned when producers may acquiese to the underlying racism in USA and not cast black actors as romantic leads.

Also, should you cast black actors in historical dramas when there were not black people there at the time. When Robin Hood has a black sidekick or the Artful Dodger is black it seems a bit incongruous to me.

I don't think the Oscars are racist par se. If there is racism in the film industry (IF) then as GranadaJoe says it may be when the film is commissioned. If a black actor doesn't get a lead in a movie then he or she is missing out on saying the best dialogue in the film and the biggest scenes etc that lend themselves to memorable performances, that in turn lead to Oscar nominations.

To nominate black actors because they are black is ludicrous and morally wrong.

But hey! Why stop there? We must nominate a gay paraplegic for best actor. Oh, there were no gay paraplegics in any movies this year. OK - what about that gay paraplegic in that phone advert? Yay! Let's have a "Best Actor in a Phone Advert" category! Yay! :barscarf:

Typical race card PC Tokenism bullshit - in relation to the Oscars at least.

To be fair, the only black actor that should have been nominated was Idris Elba, but that was in a film that was produced by Amazon and not a major studio which I think has more to do with it than anything racist. I've seen all the nominated films this year except for a couple and also saw Concussion and Beast of No Nation which has the two black actors that had the most merit for nomination. Fact is, the people who got nominated deserved it. Maybe there's a problem with black actors getting good roles? I dont know, because Denzel can get any role he wants. Along with Morgan Freeman and Samuel L Jackson.

This is the second year in a row that no black actor has been nominated, not to mention the panel is almost exclusively white. you can't blame them for kicking up a fuss

Sorry Rugby but on this I disagree with you.

The Oscars are nominated by members of the Academy who are only 2% African-American and 2% Hispanic.

That it is well out of kilter with the racial composition of the USA.

The USA needs to look at why so few minorities work in Hollywood compared to their percentage in the population, and make it more equal, considering there are lots of African-Americans making films and acting in them outside of mainstream Hollywood.

The Academy must be modernised to reflect the workers of the film industry as accurately as possible.

Generally award ceremonies are not a true reflection of talent anyway, that is the pinch of salt to be taken.
The Grammies?
They are generally about major Record companies dividing up the awards in order to promote their own acts.

White men can't jump

And the American population is only 10% black. Most of the time at least 10% of the nominations are black. Honestly though, show me a film this year with a black actor that deserves to be nominated above those that were. I said Idris Elba was good in his role, but again, that's a Netflix produced film which probably has more to do with him not getting nominated than his skin color.

If Spike Lee maybe directed a quality film instead of the shit he made called "Chi-Raq" then perhaps he would see a nomination.

Does anybody ever complain about the Music of Black Origin awards? Not bothered myself but it always seems there would be an outcry if the word Black was replaced by White.

MOBO awards were set up 20 years ago because the BRIT Awards at that time hardly ever acknowledged Black artists and Black origin music genres, even though this country had produced significant quality and amounts of them for years.

White artists have won MOBO awards so how is that racist?

Sadly the MOBOS are now commercialised and ignore cutting edge music in favour of the commercial watered down stuff.

If there is to be a MOWO awards no one can have a problem with it.

OK; did not know that. But fair to say then that black actors have won Oscars in the past, at least as far back as Gone With The Wind.

She must have felt very proud... :o

Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American to win an Academy Award—beating out her co-star Olivia de Havilland who was also nominated in the same category—but was racially segregated from her co-stars at the awards ceremony at the Coconut Grove; she and her escort were made to sit at a separate table at the back of the room.

No probs mate. I agree with a lot of what you are saying re the make up of the awarding body. What does my head in is the constant whining from the pc brigade,a lot of whom make a good living out of being offended, or demanding that the next James Bond, or the next Dr Who should be black, or that Harry Potter is racist because his three best mates are white.
I remember when the Labour Party was torn apart by Black Sections, Womens Sections, Youth Sections etc, and I remember at a regional party conference in London a bloke stood up and asked,"I thought that we were all in the same party," at which point a well known Black Lesbian,(I won't name her),replied, "We will never be in the same party, you are my white oppressor."
