As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Watched a programme on Sky Documentaries tonight called Howard's Way , the story of Everton's rise from relegation fodder to Champions in a very short time...The 1984/85 season was a remarkable one for them. Champions, European Cup Winners Cup winners and FA Cup Finalists..Yet their season was marred and overshadowed by Heysel. For the first time ever I heard the anguish and anger if Everton supporters laid bare. Now obviously the loss of life was far more important than the football repercussions, but the anger at Liverpool fans was raw, even still is. The attitude from some fans and players was, "we done nothing wrong, why are we being punished?".
I have always had a soft spot for Everton, they were the team in my lifetime that firstly and consistently threatened Liverpool in the 80s. What they started, Arsenal finished even if the pundits say Fergie knocked Liverpool off their perch , Liverpool were a busted flush by the time Man Utd won their title in 1993.
I'll have to try and find that, thanks for mentioning it BWK
I agree with what you say about Everton. I think a lot of our fans have a soft spot for that Everton side (for the reasons you highlight) and I think its mutual. Ive spoken to a few Everton fans over the years and Anfield 89 is often something they would remember fondly.
We hear all this shite about red and blue mixing together and how one brother is blue and the other red. And while that may be true there must be some hatred there too that we do not hear much about. How could there not be? Everton have numerous reasons to hate Liverpool, on and off the field. And Everton could easily justify claiming their club has more pedigree once you look beyond the media hype. The very thing that built Liverpool's name (conquering Europe) is the very thing Liverpool's fans prevented that Everton team of the 80s being able to emulate when their time came. Not forgetting our team of the same period too!
As for Man United knocking Liverpool off their perch ... that has always been the sort of selective bollocks that surrounds Man United where they take credit for something that was done before them. Like how we hear so much about the fucking class of 92 but rarely anything of our own crop of talented youngsters that won TWO titles before the Neville's, Beckham, Scholes and Butt could grow pubes (probably not Giggs though the hairy fucking ! )
I haven't seen that documentary yet. There is a palpable hatred from hardcore evertonians towards liverpool. It used to be side by side, but once the dust settled on that period of everton's history and they started looking back on what they achieved and what they could have achieved that is when they hatred came to the surface. Given where i currently reside Everton is my closest club, 10 minute walk.
It's also understated how that European ban impacted The Arsenal team of '89-'91. We were also denied a shot at the European Cup when in all reality there were not dominant teams as there is now. I also believe that had we participated in the European Cup in 1989/90, Graham would have won it or got the final in '91/'92. Our first attempt in Europe under Graham ended with the devestating home defeat to Sven's Benfica. The next foray into Europe ended in the glory of Copenhagen, and a final the following year. Graham had learnt how to play in Europe and mastered it. Had Graham had the benefit of European football between 1986-1990 we would have been more successful in European competition with that team at it's peak. That team had the guts, spirit and quality to be European Champions and we would have dominated the league domestically in the 1990's.
On a different note I've also seen a couple of houses round here with Liverpool flags and banners declaring Liverpool premier league champions. In the words of Keegan, I would just love it if City caught them. I know they won't but the thought keeps me happy for a while.

I agree 100% with you that Arsenal under George Graham would have learned in the European Cup in 1989/90 and would have been in strong contention in 91/92....The thing about the Benfica game tie was it really looked as if the work was done in the away leg...People close to Graham said that he took that defeat so badly, it changed his approach and the team were probably more conservative after that. We were well beaten in the end at home but we did lead and it did go to extra time..I remember being gutted for days after it.

I went to the away leg 1-1 draw in the stadium of light a big, vast, concrete bowl , not worthy of the name. Home leg I fully expected us to win, maybe the players were complacent too after mauling Austria Vienna 5-1 in the previous round - I went to the 2nd leg of that, a 1-0 defeat, by coach, took 2.5 days there and back with the travel club, the police escort wouldn’t let us stop in Germany - the stench of hundreds of people pooing in service station toilet cubicles after holding it in for a day and a half has never left me

I was at Highbury for that benfica game, still haven't quite got over the shell shock of that extra time defeat.
*word censored* supporters are already unbearable and they haven't won it yet.
shoving it in our faces and when we say something back we are called bitter.
the club and fans are terrible winners
Sunday night during the Merseyside derby the "biggest Liverpool fan" in work posted a photo of his dinner on the work WhatsApp group. Time of this posting was 20.11 or approximately eleven minutes into the second half. Two other die hard reds agreed that it looked nice..Last night my Liverpool mad brother in law sent me and others jokes on WhatsApp during the Victims v Palace game. These are the type of "supporters " we have to listen to...wrecks my fucking head..
Fuck the lot of them. But in all honesty, if it came down to the choice of these murdering scumbags winning one league title in 30 years or the other scum winning the European Cup last year, you know what we would have said. No matter what the cúnts do and how much the media go over the top, they'll always be a bunch of misery dwelling, banana throwing, racist, murdering filth.
