Here's an interesting and surprising point.Rob wrote:Pretty bizarre, I do agree. It's bound to be weighted in favour of the modern era but it's pretty tough luck on Alex James who by all accounts was the TH14 of his day.
At least Joe Mercer is still to come !
But it does make you wonder how they reached the judgement all the same.
Someone I know has watched Arsenal since 1927. He was until recently a season ticket holder, poor health preventing him from going more than three times a season since last season, but still watches all the games on TV. I think the only games he has missed were during the war.
He said the only player from the 1930's who would make the starting line up in Wenger's team would be Ted Drake, whose size and workrate would be a problem for any defender.
The rest, even Bastin and James, would be in the squad but probably not on the bench.
I asked him why, thinking he would say that today, players are simply too strong and too fast compared to the 1930's, due to sports science and improved nutrition since childhood.
No.
He said quite simply, the 1930's players were not good enough.

Another player who always seems to be overlooked when it comes to these things is John Radford. I was far too young to have seen him play but he scored 150 goals for the club and was part of the Fairs Cup and Double winning side. Yet literally no one mentions him. As a genuine question because I haven't seen enough of him to know, why is this?
For greatest ever player I would have to say Tony Adams - the bridge between the old Arsenal and the new Arsenal and won so many trophies for both.
My top 10 would probably be (a lot based on video tapes and hearsay):
1) Tony Adams
2) Thierry Henry
3) Dennis Bergkamp
4) Patrick Vieira
5) Alex James
6) David Seaman
7) Ian Wright
Alan Smith
9) Liam Brady
10) George Armstrong (blame my dad)
Smith might be a bit of a strange one but we won 2 titles with him leading the line and winning the golden boot. He also did a lot more for the team than just score goals as well. Compare to Brady who for all his talent didn't really win much with us. Admittedly much comes down to the fact he was in a lesser side but greats need to win things.
Seaman is the best keeper I have ever seen. Older supporters talk about Jennings and Wilson but his combination of strength, positioning and agility
was as good as it gets.
Anyway, I don't claim a huge amount of Arsenal knowledge but these are my own views.
