Re: Ali
The man transcended sport, he truly was "the greatest". That horrible illness robbed him and us of so much over the last few decades. Rest in peace....we'll never see his like again.

Yes, sums him up perfectly, in terms of world sporting icons only Ali and Pele go beyond their own field.rodders999 wrote:The man transcended sport, he truly was "the greatest". Re: Ali
George Foreman quotes as below..
"Declaring Ali the "greatest personality that sports has ever seen, or ever will see", he said: "He is one of those special people. He was one of those things you see maybe once in a lifetime. Like a total eclipse.
"You are not going to see anything like that again. Boxing doesn’t do enough to define what he was.
"He was the greatest personality ever."
Totally agree with that sentiment

Re: Ali
I dunno if he was the greatest our 'Enry knocked him down at Wembley in 63!
In although seriousness his death is a great loss to the world of sport.

My memory maybe fading but I'm fairly certain Cooper didn't floor Ali at Highbury in '66. I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time!Rugby Gooner wrote:And he did it at Highbury!JMascis666 wrote:I dunno if he was the greatest our 'Enry knocked him down at Wembley in 63!

Re: Ali
I remember reading Henry Cooper complaining about shenanigans going on in Clay's corner when he was knocked down at Wembley.

Re: Ali
Had massive problems with Frazier but dealt with Foreman masterfully, who in turn mullered Frazier.
Add Norton into the mix and the 70s was the Golden Era of Heavyweight boxing; nobody ducked anybody. None of this 'protecting your 0' bullshit, just proper hard fuckers going at it for 15 rounds.
Not my personal favourite heavyweight, but arguably his "The Greatest" sobriquet is well deserved.
RIP big man.
