That Guitar you've built looks amazing, is that a Mahogany Body? -

Image
Thats a nice geetar, you've got quite a collection! :barscarf:

My geetar body was made from a £20 2" thick block of Sapele Mahogany, I had to cut it in two along the side with a hand saw to make the back cover & cavity, it took an hour! :cussing: Was too thick for table saw.

I think building an acoustic or archtop electric geetar is more advanced stuff, some say building a Telecaster or solid body is intermediate level woodwork standard but done well.

I'm hoping to build a Gibson ES-335 style guitar, or ES-330 / Epiphone Casino type sometime! :barscarf:

Seriously though, I would end up by sawing the fecking table in half by mistake. Long longgggg ago when I was a student desperate to earn some money in the summer hols, my brother (commanded by my dear departed Mum) who ran his own building company - he had 28 blokes in his employ; took me on, I was only doing manual graft mixing cement, carrying stuff up and down ladders; which was fine. But, foolishly one day he gave me some 'proper' building work to do on these door frames and doors and I Totally fuckked them up....needless to say I was put back on lug and lift and clean-up duties.

I just don't have that building gene...I can do other fiddly stuff, like I used to build my own stereo's:amps/speakers etc buy the stuff - wiring, everything and get a friend to make the wooden cabinets with proper multi-dovetail jointing etc...and made enough money to pay for a 2 year trip around the world when I was 25yrs - glad I did it now seeing as how it looks like COVID has changed that for the next 5 - 8 years at least.

btw my other 3rd guitar is a Taylor Mini Koa which has an amazing sound when put through a Mic or via it's in-built pick-ups...the body shines like golden honey in the sunlight, the action is amazing and of course is so much easier to play especially for smaller hands ...When I recommence giving my 8yr old Grandson guitar lessons it will be his 10th birthday pressie as he plays that when he comes over for lessons and Loves it.

very similar to this:

Image

Steve Howe has a very old Gibson ES-335 he used to book a seat for it on planes when Yes toured as he didn't trust it to the baggage handlers etc...He leaves it at home when he tours now...but it is worth a small fortune and a bit more due to it being his..A Beautiful model that has recently seen a resurgence in up n coming prog rock bands the guy who used to play for Big Big Train plays one I think? :?

This is the base kit I bought from the States. Kramer Pacer body. Swapping out the cheap Floyd Rose copy trem for a real FR trem and dumping the cheap PUP for a DiMarzio humbucker. Upgrading the tuning pegs too.

Have sanded and filled the body and primed it here;

Taped for the white stripes on the red base coat:

Then the red base coat:

Starting to look the part now!

Masking for the black stripes:

Paintjob done and first couple of coats of lacquer on:

Now wait a week, add "5150" decals, then another couple coats lacquer, with wet and dry sanding, and let cure for a few weeks, then polish and buff, then wire the electronics, build it, and play the shit out of it! :barscarf:

Well I downloaded Flickr (both the website and the app) but cannot get a photo to post on here. It either shows up as a hyperlink or as a broken photo icon.

Any ideas? I have the free version.

This is the code bit that works, u have to mess with & delete the rest, then select the red picture image icon logo on yer post & insert the code inside. https://live.staticflickr.com/xxxxxxxxx ... xxxxxxxjpg

So click on yer pic in flickr , select share icon on the bottom right then next pick BBCode icon, select size & then & copy & paste the link, keep the bit above & get rid of the rest.

So this part goes inside the red picture image icon https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/489 ... 691b_m.jpg

So put the edited link inside the red image icon tag.

Cheers buddy. Finally figured it out. The app and mobile versions don't offer the BBCode so did it on pc. Many thanks. 8)

Looking Really Good DB...what kind of application will / do you use?

Make sure you take lots of piccies of the final stages and especially when it's done :barscarf:

Cheers OneBard. :barscarf:

Not sure what you mean by "application" though?

Did you mean amplification maybe? If so, I was up until recently using a 100w Marshall twin channel mosfet reverb combo. Had a BOSS ME10 multi-fx running into it. Lovely set up for all kinds of rock and metal and sweet foot-switched clean channel for classical too.

But I sold it as I don't play in bands anymore and it was wasted being used with headphones in my attic/man cave. So now I either run the ME10 into a small pre-amp and then into Adobe Audition home recording studio on my pc for composing/recording or I run the guitar through the pre-amp and into Guitar Rig 5 digital fx on my pc for just jamming and shredding.

Guitar wise I own a Jackson, a Gibbo, an Ibanez, a Washburn, a couple cheap acoustics, a Fender bass, a nylon string classical, and about nine or ten bits of guitar bodies / necks / electronics lying around in various states of deconstruction! Oh and my missus is buying me another Jackson for my birthday in June! :D

I also paint guitars for a hobby/second income. Later today I'll put up a few pics of some of the work I've done and sold. I say a "second income" but tbh its nearly impossible to make a profit doing it but I just love designing and painting them.

I thought EVH just bought a Strat body, changed the trem out & put some coloured tape on! :D  That looks like a lot of serious artist style paint work & design! Great stuff!

I must admit I'm lazy & would prefer to get a nice piece of wood & just finish it with some Danish Oil & Nitro Lacquer spray. :barscarf:

My first guitar build was a Fender Jazzmaster type , so bought the neck, hardware parts & body & assembled it with some P90 pickups.

Then I finished it in Turquoise Metallic colour spray, it's expensive spray paint in cans & is very fussy, the guitar body has a few small blotches , I also had problems with the spray can due to humidity issues!, it's OK from a distance but look close & it's crap, like a unintended relic finish :barscarf: :blah: Maybe I need to get a proper spray gun system & a spray booth, but that's a bit of cash! :cussing:

It's an expensive hobby, so I prefer to cut & shape necks & bodies from timber, saw the fret slots, fit the frets, wind & assemble my own pickups ect, to save some cash, it just all takes a bit longer. I've even cut down on using power tools, hand tools like bench planes take longer but less chance of messing up / plus not as dangerous. I know a few lads who are missing digits from construction site accidents. :censored:

I draw the line at making tuners & tremolos / tailpieces, too much metalwork for me! :banghead:

I did make a bridge from some U bar & cut & fitted the aluminum saddles, cost me about £15, enough for a few bridges, instead of buying a new bridge for £100! Also built a pickup winder inside what looks like a birdbox for £25, instead of paying £200-400! :barscarf:

Just waiting for the weather to pickup now, so I can make more sawdust mess in the garden! :D

Got another one on the go...........!

That is some amazing work mate. The fact you do all the woodworking part of the build is incredible and way out of my league!

Spraycans can be difficult alright but a lot cheaper than a gun and spraybooth set up. The 5150 above is done with cans and while it would not be of the quality to sell, it will do nicely for a tribute guitar that I'll keep.

The story about EVH and the Strat body is true although it was a Charvel strat, not a Fender. He did that for the original Frankenstrat that he paraffin dipped the pups on in the 70s. Then in about 1983 he went to the Kramer factory and built and painted the 5150 that I copied above.

Feckin' Pre-emptive iMac shyte! :banghead: :D

Yeah I meant Amplification DOH!

Sounds like you have your own studio for recording...sounds A - feckin -Mazing. I'm not too techno gifted (as Clummo will tell you) I just get Mind Lock when I try stuff, so I am trying to slowly learn to use a Tascam DP 000EX Home Studio it has very good built-in Condenser Mics ...I enjoy doing multi-layer stuff with the Acoustic guitar/s.

I've also got a second-hand Juno Gi Keyboard which when plugged in direct for recording the Strings sound pretty good as does the Acoustic Bass and Flutes.

You should look into DAW software dude. They are dirt cheap and can be run on most pc's and macs. Great for multitracking and layering guitars and synths etc.

There are even free "light" versions available that don't have all the bells and whistles but work fine for home recording, things like Audacity and Garageband and even Pro Tools has a free version!

I remembered reading about Steve Howe of Yes & his Rickenbacker 12 strings a while back, I found the website, also I think his Rickenbacker RM 1993 12 geetar is featured in the Ricky 12 string book. :barscarf:

http://www.rickbeat.com/photofeatures/s ... vehowe.htm

That's similar to what I made, but no body binding plus wider neck.

I do like a bit of Psych Garage Rock Freakbeat Maximum R&B myself, that was apparently the start of Prog Rock. 8)

Before the lockdown there was an Indie Psych scene going on last few years, with bands like The Vryll Society, I had my hardcore indie mates all of a sudden asking me about old Byrds, Roger McGuinn, Love & Arthur Lee records & checking out Syd Barratt / early Pink Floyd stuff.

Those Byrds songs had some absolutely amazing guitar melodies in them. Not the OTT technical shredding like I mostly listen to and play, but just really good melodic lines and harmonies. Crosby and McGuinn are two very underrated guitarists.

Wow! That Snake skin one looks complicated - :rubchin: Did you use wire fencing to get the effect?

That last one looks awesome... bet it was amazing when the neck, pickups, etc were all added? Have you got any piccies of them when they were finished & built ?
