Guitarist's Thread

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

Have a listen to this. Its the isolated guitar track of Eddie Van Halen playing "I'm the One" from their debut album. Straight through. No overdubs. Rhythm and lead solo recorded as one take. Absolute genius. 8)

I came across this Absolute Gem on You Tube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr9j5pbKHGA

It is a Yes concert (Sunday 3rd October 1971) - and I WAS THERE!!! :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf:

There was a series of I think it was 5 or 6 25 minute programmes by the BBC called "Sounding Out" and believe me back in those days to get ANY kind of modern music on the TV (only 3 Channels ITV/Granada. BBC1 & BBC 2) was a rarity and a real treat.

My older brother Michael (may he Rest in Peace) was studying (I think a BA) at the Royal Academy of Art on a (then) 2 year bursary/scholarship and I had gone to stay with him from Friday to Monday...and he knew I was 'into' Yes Big Time, so having got me drunk on snake bites the night before - I was Hanging - he said do you fancy going to see a band tonight, we can get a lift with my mate - he had a beat up old Mini with No seats in the back that he used to transport his amps & stuff - even though I was literally at (snake bites) deaths door I was well up for it - Away from home no Curfew etc...no parents to nag me :D - So we get the the hall and there was no sign/s outside saying who was playing...so in we go and there I am half way down the right side and then they come on and it's like - JEEEEZZZUSSS HOLY Mother of GOD! - I've got Goose Bumps now remembering it...

It's weird I was so "High' (sober no drugs etc) - I was only 16  - From just watching my favourite band play "LIVE" ... anyways I remember (ish) the BBC Sounding Out series being broadcast in the winter of 1972 (I think) - And the Yes one was the first one in that series (They also did Lindisfarne and BB. King & ELP I think?) But I didn't realise that it was the very same gig (maaaan! :-P ) I had been at.... I've only just put 1 + 1 together

What I DO Remember is that it was aired at 10pm and my disciplinariancunt of a Father wouldn't let me watch it...so I had to pretend to go to bed and sneak down to my mates house - I think his father was on Night Shift or something...and we watched it on his Black & White TV....

Ohhh! Boy! Those were the days...

Now before I bore you to death and you fall asleep - in case you're wondering why? I've put this on The Guitarists Thread

Even though it is only 25 - 30 mins long in the last third of the programme - Steve Howe does this little thing on his acoustic etc...But then They show the band playing "Yours Is No Disgrace" and Steve Howes FretWork etc on that track (remember this is 1971 (50 years ago) is Feckin' AWESOME.

Anyway hope you Enjoy it (should you watch it).

<sigh> 8)

Not sure when these were done / recorded Interviews with Van Halen (Eddie, Alex and Dave)

Really enjoyable how they just reminisce about their beginnings and the stuff they got up to here and there (trashed Hotel Room in Aberdeen Scotland.. having just played 22 Gigs in 25 Days...on their first UK Tour / Visit.
