I went to Cairo for around 11/12 days in 2003, just as the US and it's allies had invaded Iraq (for context).
All of the usual shit at the pyramids as described , with taxi drivers to/from airport

Trips to the museum and to Alexandria were mostly interesting and uneventful, and jobs which no longer exist in the west (porter at train station, usher at the cinema) still exist there.
My companion and I were not on a tourist type trip so probably avoided some of the shit described elsewhere. Can't compare it to 2017 so wouldn't know how to approach such a trip now. I enjoyed it in much the same way as the best colonials - when you've had enough of the culture, take refuge in a nice hotel or restaurant
