Papers over here are taking the piss out of our government today - they are to stage a press conference to lay out their plan for "living with covid", and apparently that plan entails us doing nothing and staying cautious for another 6 weeks

Compare that to the uk plan announced yesterday where everything was laid out in stages and when the different aspects of life will reopen - it may not work to plan, but at least they are giving the people a timeframe letting them know that if we keep being sensible we will see all these reopenings.

We are being told to keep doing nothing but we are offering you no hope anytime soon :banghead: :censored: :censored: :censored:
There are still plenty of people over here complaining about the timeframe.

Look, the timeframe might fall apart if things start going tits up over there again, but at least it is a plan and gives people some hope if they dont take the piss. We are being asked to lockdown, then to lockdown, and then to lockdown a bit longer  Our government set up a sub committee and are having a press conference and announcement today that says that barring schoopls things will remain the same for another 6 weeks - we need to have a press conference for that ??
I have continually said it before and will say it again, there is no will or interest in the Irish government to get the country back open again - these c.unts would rather hide behind lockdowns than to actually do something positive or give any hope to the people. We are expected to keep sacrificing our lives without and prospect or encouragement that our sacrifice will be worthwhile - we were told that we had to wait for the vaccine and now that it is here there is still no change and the c.unts cant even organise getting it to the people most in need

I'm totally fine with our timeframe. The 5 week buffer between stages is obviously prudent. I was just pointing out that there are plenty of people that want it all sooner.

I suppose it's a case of can't please all of the people all of the time.

Considering the ROI's location to the UK which has the highest death rate of any major country in the world, I wouldn't be complaining about govt policy tbh. Looking at the stats, our cousins south of the border have a death rate of less than half ours per 100k population.

The scientists are saying we could have another 30,000 more deaths before things get better over here, and that is will a full vaccine rollout. Ireland has a grand total of 4,137 so far.

are you for real?

Ireland have handled the pandemic superbly well.
You have half the death rate of the UK. You will therefore still probably end up back to normal quicker than us.

First game of next season, full stadium at the Emirates. The dream!

I really hope the vaccine takeup in the under 50s is high. It will need to be communicated that if we don't get to herd immunity by having at least 80% takeup across the population, this leaves the door open for a possible mutation next winter. I know some people wont like this, but I am in favour of vaccine passports.

As this pandemic subsides I think we will need some sort of memorial day, to remember those that succumbed during probably the hardest years in this country for quite some time. Certainly since WW2.
it is possible certainly - I am hopeful about the summer, and think things will get pretty much back to normal by the end of it.
Still a concern over next winter but hopefully we all get a booster jab in the autumn to get us through that.

Come over and live this side for past 12 months and tell me that - you seem to forget that we have been doing stricter lockdowns for a lot longer than the uk, and as I said earlier, we have no plans or intentions of coming out of ours. All across europe there are countries lifting restrictions left, right and centre, but yet we are extending ours. Flicking through the papers this morning and one of them went through the state of place in a lot of european countries, and the one's they listed ALL had detailed plans for reopening over the next few months - we have none

well if the experts in Ireland think it is too early to ease restrictions then that is a sensible approach - no point copying other countries.
you only have to look at the mess the UK made last year to see that.

but you will come out of lockdown. they are not going to keep you locked up forever

Come and live over here with all the Boris fuckups and you'll gladly go home. The only reason we have a plan is that we outclassed the Europeans with our Vaccine procurement and distribution process (thanks to Kate Bingham). And then Brussels went and had a hissy fit about AZN supplies, which their governments dismissed as an inferior vaccine and now their populations won't take it. Even though it's been proven after one dose to be as efficacious if not more than the Pfizer vaccine.

Their position on the Astra vaccine was and still is political . The Pfizer jab being 3 times the price has the potential to earn them money in the long term they don't want the world to shun it for a much cheaper option before they get their investment back.
They have always been a protectionist organisation and that's all this is , looking after their assets.

I look at the Boris timeline and largely agree with it apart from the start date . Another few weeks and the infection rates and consequently deaths would have been greatly reduced and the opening starting point would have been much lower.
They are gambling on Easter to be a natural break to evaluate the surge in cases but had they waited until after Easter they would have had more vaccinations and less cases.

Boris and his government have continually stated that their only objective is to protect the NHS.
If they were at all bothered about saving lives then the policies that they have had over the past year would have been very different (for example shutting the borders, having a workable test and trace system)

maybe you need to swap places with augie

The problem here is the government are weak and indecisive and only concerned about getting re-elected. That is the reason we are where we are. The first piss weak attempt at lockdown failed because it wasn't strict or long enough - because the idiot government couldn't interfere with the gobshite populace's right to go get hammered on a saturday night God forbid.

The other problem is the amount of entitled cùnts in this country that keep breaking the rules.

One of the reason why so many have given up on the lockdown is because our government is telling us we cant do this and can only go as far as that while all the time letting other nationals come in from hot spots.

I don't blame anyone for being pissed off and I don't need to go to Oireland .

Currently the R rate is about 0.75 and over the last month cases are falling at about 20% a week.
Opening schools to all kids( they are currently open to vulnerable kids and key workers) is estimated to increase the R rate by about 40% so about 0.3.making 1.05
Cases are currently at 11,000 so with an R rate at 1.05 cases could easily increase at a rate of over 500 a week.
Delaying everything for 5 more weeks (for schools this is only 14 days of educationbecause of Easter) would at current levels decrease the rate from 1100 to below 400.
So when the rate goes up it would increase by 20 cases per week. Furthermore you would have 5 weeks more of first vaccinations and many of the original group getting their second .
To me it's bleeding obvious , I know people are stir crazy and the photos of London when the sun came out showed that they are ready to break ranks but if instead of complicated graphs on Hancocks half hour actual explanetary figures like the ones I have given were publicised , I reckon most people could follow them and we all would be safer in the long run.
BTW Rob , I would have shut the borders months ago and only had people coming in under the strictest conditions carrying food and the like.
