As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Damned if one does, damned if one doesn't. The club gets criticised for submitting bids below the asking price, yet when we do submit an acceptable bid it is deemed as overpaying.
We paid 45 million for a 25 yr old PL proven striker, Sterling who is 2 years older is going to Chelsea for around the same price.
30 million for a quality PL proven CM like Tielemans seems like a bargain. Kalvin Phillips went to city for 40 million +.
Proven what ? What has he proved ? He has proven himself to be good enough to be a useful squad player at a club like city. He hasnt proven himself to be good enough to be first choice number 9 for a club intent on challenging for the top prizes. He hasnt proven himself to be a 20 league goals a season striker

The reason the club gets criticised is because they nearly always get it wrong. We do lowball when we should just pay the going price, we do overpay for rubbish players, and we do let top talent either walk out on a free, or we sell them for a pittance far too often.

Proven that he can score goal at all levels of the game, and if not scoring assisting for others to score. Proven that he can cope with the demands of the Premier League, Champions League and International level, and proven that he can adapt to contributing to a title, cup winning team. Seriously, what else do you want?
Given that only 2-3 players a season reach 20 plus goals in the league every season notably Kane, Salah, Lukaku, Mane who are still playing, saying we need a 20 goal a season forward is not easy to find.

You obviously don't rate the guy and thats fair enough. There is enough stats posted on his goal scoring record but to reiterate since he has made his debut in the PL, his minutes per goal rate is bettered by Aguero, Salah, Kane, Ronaldo, Auba and Vardy who are the elite bunch, so it kind of proves that he is best of the rest. Even the greatest striker of all time and the best Asian player ever Son is behind him. Like I have stated previously, he wouldn't be my first choice if we are to sign only 1 striker but he is far from a dud that you are making him out to be.
But we are talking fair price here, please name a striker available for 45 million quid who guarantees 20 goals a season.
If you want a top striker from the Premier league or one of the other top teams you pay a premium . If you are selling a player because you want rid then you take what's on offer . Bear in mind that if you don't want them the chances are that they are not high on anyone else's list.
It's the difference between a buyers market and a selling one.

I would have thought that most would consider a club of our size should be doing a lot better than it is (I'd imagine utd would feel the same about their club).
As for the not spending, did we not spend the most last summer? The problem isn't necessarily how much we spend, it is that we're not buying the quality required to move us forward.
I would prefer we buy one or two outstanding players than 4 or 5 average ones.

Greatest striker of all time? can you elaborate?
Tongue in cheek obviously over the media wankathon.

Did half of you not learn anything from the last 10 years of Wenger and the entirety of the Kroenke's reign?
This assumption we should be challenging for titles is a fantasy, as far as I have observed the owners want to raise us to a very specific level and maintain the status quo.
Last season we almost got there, the aim albeit unlikely if those around strengthen as much or better than we do, is to go one step further this season.
If as owners you were serious about titles and challenges there is no way in hell you would employ an absolute novice and then extend his contract when he failed to deliver.
You would not allow words like 'project' and 'process' to be used you would talk of targets and aims.
Stop deluding yourselves lads, Arsenal are not in the BUSINESS of titles and trophies

I was referring to the “we don’t buy superstars, we make them” that you left off…. Which was wheeled out to reduce expectation.
I think the club in the last couple of years have spent, hugely, in certain area’s….Pepe ,Auba, Ozil, Ramsdale, White
Certainly can’t accuse them of not spending - spending wisely, or getting good value, is entirely different though.
If we get Tielemans in, along with Jesus and Vieira that gives us so many forward options…..but I’m still unsure how we would line up, or if we have improved our defensiveness enough (tacking the opposition )
