Don't misunderestimate Man City

The reason Villa and Everton always come up slightly short is because they don't have the money and therefore the depth in squad. Everton played most of the season without strikers so they were just as unlucky as we were, if not more so! We are increasingly looking the same level as Everton and Villa whereas a few years ago we only had Man U to worry about. At the moment, the only difference is that Wenger's reputation and past success (and the fact that we are in London) attracts a slightly higher caliber of player still. But that reputation is on the wane and for the first time, players Arsenal would like to keep are leaving in their prime. And all the while the likes on City continue to strengthen. We could have easily been in for Given and Barry if we wanted but we obviously don't have the money and/or the same draw to compete. Those players are not just picking up a nice pay packet but also being sold a vision/plan of ambition (and a chance to play with world class team mates) that City have and we, by the messages the board send out, don't.

And spuddy, they donâ€™t look that similarâ€¦

Great post B.T. agree, and about the comparison also...

Think thats a fair post BT, but isnt that one of the main critisicms of Arsenal? The point is we have the ability to get there, and maintain our position there and it gets overlooked too easily by some people.

As for Sparky, he is under huge pressure now - bad start to the season and he is toast.

Can I just say to the optimists/rose-tinters that it is all well and good saying that the comments made by number 5 and 1 or 2 others are based on hypertheticals but at the end of the day wengers (therefore your plans) are built on the assumption that these wonder kids are going to be good enough someday and I would say the assumption that citeeh will spend big is a safer bet to make

I just saw their dream team in the paper. They COULD really disrupt the 'top 4' but I cant see it yet personally. If Everton had this money I would be shitting it

I think Hughes at City is in the position that Ranieri was in at Chelsea. He could take them close but only that far. If they want to win things they'll have to find a Mourinhio/Hiddinck character to deliver.

But in the meantime if they spend big then 4th is well within their scope. And that's without considering Villa Everton and Spurs, all of whom will also be looking to make the CL payday.

Let's hope Wenger/Gazidis/Hill-Wood/Fizman are alive to that -

Very sound post BT - particularly the point about a reputation receeding into a distant past. That's just what it is.

If we don't rekindle the flames of that reputation this season, it'll be even more distant come 2010/11.
