So....where are we going to finish up in the League ?

Post by SteveO 35 »

It's not very original I know, but everything I've seen so far this year suggests to me that my original prediction of "outside the top 4" is going to come true (sadly...believe me there's no personal pleasure involved if this ends up being right)

Simple question - we had the optimism after Everton, and the pessimism after yesterday.

So what do you think now....

People react emotionally to every result, and I fully expect that to show on the poll.

Get a few wins under our belts again, and the poll will swing accordingly... predictable and frustratingly kneee jerk, as always.

I can understand why you say knee jerk g88ner but that is really not the case if you look at the bigger picture. We have been a team in decline for quite some time now. Yesterdays result is indicative of what has happened at our club with theam failing to win any true tests.

I have long said that we have finished in the top four not because of our superiority but becaause there was no creditable challengers.

That is no longer the case and I really do think that we are going to have a nasty suprise at the end of the season. We could have had one last year and was saved by a Villa collapse the like of which you cannot see happening to City.

hard to say this early but i've gone for 5th on the basis that, as Percy said we've had a bit of luck in getting 4th place a couple of times with Villa's collapse and the lasagne incident and i think our luck will run out this year.

I'm not disagreeing with your logic, and I fully accept that some like you, Augie, donaldo (and many others) have views that don't change that frequently based on our form... I should add that the more optimistic fans are just as guilty of being knee jerk, especially after the Everton result.

I'm probably guilty of reading ****'s thread just before posting, and that probably influenced the way I wrote it. I know full well that only a few weeks ago **** was saying we could do very well in the league... now, after 2 shit results, he wants Wenger sacked  Although, I accept that **** really isn't a good example of a typical, grounded fan

But, my point still stands... I genuinely believe that any poll on Arsenal will resemble our current form and will therefore fluctuate depending on recent results. Win a few wins, and the poll will swing, in my opinion.

I was impressed by the everton game. Reasonably happy with Portsmouth and Celtic, but actually felt reasonably optimistic after the game at Old Shatford.
This game has not convinced me of anything but:

City are a good side
Adebayor is a *word censored* to end all *word censored*
We have the same weaknesses as last year

but, if we play well and avoid crucial injuries, I think we can nick fourth from an average-looking Liverpool side. However, I'd not be too surprised with fifth.

I was going for 4th before the start of the season. Now with Spurs and especially City looking very serious challengers I'm really not confident at all.

I've also gone with 5th, not because of yesterdays result, i thought it from the first day of the season

I could see us finishing anywhere between 3rd & 6th tbh.

I could easily see the Bin Dippers getting drawn into a battle for 4th with us & the rest. Obviously we cant write off the Scum, Everton & possibly Villa but over the course of the season we’ve got enough quality over them. If it wasn’t for the fact the Totts/Villa don’t have any European distractions I’d almost write them off as a threat completely.

So 3rd to 5th could well be a 3-way fight between us, Gerrard FC & Citeh. Everything’s rosy for City right now but their only test so far was yesterday & we bent over for them with silly mistakes etc so who knows how good they really are. There’s still at least as many questions about them as us.

What with them also not having any European distractions & our lack of quality depth it could well come down to how well we cope once the CL knockout stages start (obviously assuming we make it through the group) & how far we go. On the plus side by then we’ll have got most of our toughest (in theory at least) league games out the way.

Pretty confident we'll manage top 4 again but 3rd is pretty much our glass ceiling & cant see that changing anytime soon tbh.

You are right when you say people tend to react emotionally after a big win/defeat but equally as Percy said, there is a long term trend here.

By process of elimination Man U and Chelsea are way beyond us. I'd be utterly astonished if - with this squad - we surpassed them. So third is the absolute tops. I actually think we are better than Liverpool but having seen City hammer us without Tevez, I'm struggling to see us as better than them.

Come the window they could spend £50 million more. We can't and won't spend 50 p :banghead: :x :x

I also think Spurs will provide a much more consistent challenge and I wouldn't rule Villa out, although their squad is shallow like ours.

I also think we have ridden our luck on 4th for too long.

Final spot 5th or 6th.
