The Wonder of Who?? (1/10)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Cus downloaded it last week on itunes what a top tune must admit expected some sort of usual drunken mob, but well srprised
It's cracking isn't it.

Should have been performed on the last game at Highbury, but sadly unlike Roger Daltrey, no one knows who 'Yeah' are.

I suppose Roger could have performed it, but sadly it doesn't suit his voice so it wouldn't have done him justice.

usual thread starter. Apologies to all those who have debated this ad infinitum, but we print what we are sent.
I know the lyric to that song here it is

When no-one else can understand me
When everything I do is wrong
You give me hope and consolation
You give me strength to carry on

And youre always there to lend a hand
In everything I do
Thats the wonder
The wonder of you

And when you smile the world is brighter
You touch my hand and Im a king
Your kiss to me is worth a fortune
Your love for me is everything

Ill guess Ill never know the reason why
You love me like you do
Thats the wonder
The wonder of you

Bollocks to that shit.......

I was nothing but a child
When they took my heart away
Now I stand in single file
Underneath the grey clouds

She has tried to make me hers
And to take my heart away
To relieve me of my cares
And to love me truly

But there’ll never be a girl
Who can take my heart away
From the sight of Charlie George
Lying in the sunshine

I’ve watched them all my life
Those little men in red and white
Now I’ll never leave their sight
Little men in red and white

I love those men in red and white
I love all the men in red and white

I was nothing but a child
When they took my heart away
Now I stand in single file
Underneath the grey skies

I have watched them all my life
Those little men in red and white
Now I’ll never leave their sight
Little men in red and white

I love those men in red and white
I love all the men in red and white

I'm in the Highbury sunshine, Oh Yeah!
I'm in the Highbury sunshine, Oh Yeah!
I'm in the Highbury sunshine, Oh Yeah!
I'm in the Highbury sunshine, Oh Yeah!

Top song,
but there is a way to stop this Elvis crap in its tracks and thats to drown it out as soon as the club starts playing it. Do that enough times with chants of ARSENAL!-ARSENAL!-ARSENAL! and the club will soon get the message.

Much has changed since we left Highbury. I'm disapponted by pre match passive nature of the crowd waiting to be spoon fed entertainment by the club's PA. Its getting more like the cinema 'Pearl and Dean' experience than being at football. What happened to chanting each players name in turn - he claps us and we clap and cheer in return - I hate that PA contrived nonsense - PA; 'Ed!' Crowd; duardo! me; Bollocks!

I agree with you singup4theArse, I personally don't ever see the Elvis song catching on. I do understand what & why they are trying to do it but you cannot simply expect the atmosphere to improve through playing an old Elvis song. It will improve but it will take time and will happen through the fans and not the PA.

Sadly I don't think it will unless a radical unforeseeable change in football culture happens.

The whole demographics of who goes to see a game of football has changed, people who spend £40 upwards to see a game are passive because for that amount of money they don't expect to create the atmosphere.

You also have to remember that it has been nearly 15 years since terraces were at football games, so an entire generation of people have grown up without such a terrace culture. Which is why on the rare occasions when they can get a ticket ahead of the home counties set they haven't got a clue and start doing mexican bloody waves.

It's probably right that a lot of that terrace culture of the past has gone, but it looks like the baby has been disposed of along with the bathwater.

So true about the change in fanbase.
On the occasions I've been to the emirates some supporters have asked why we persist with the 'we're the Clock end/North Bank Highbury' chant as we've moved and it would be nice to sing something more inclusive so the other supporters can join in. When It's suggested they start a song they sit there schtum. How do these people think that songs come about?

Totally true.

Their being there for the atmosphere is like their turning up to the zoo to see an elephant, they just expect it to be there. They no more expect to make the atmosphere than they would expect to make an elephant while they're at the zoo.

In the days of terracing it was so minimal, you paid bearly anything, so what you expected to get was what you expected to put in. It's a total paradigm shift.

I know that Red Action try their best but it is a bit embarrassing when you hear them chanting songs of old players, it's like trying to prove 'I've been here that long you know'. Even singing the Vieira song, it's not that he's been gone long enough to reach a cult status.

You didn't hear people singing songs about Brady, Charlie George or Frank McLintock in 1987, not unless you wanted to sound like a boring fart banging on about the past.

As for the North bank/Clock End chant, that itself looks a bit odd as there is no Clock End or North Bank. In fact one flaw with this new stadium is that one end looks exactly the same as the other. Why on earth they couldn't have put the clock inside the stadium and actually have a "clock end" is beyond me? I suppose it might have taken up space where an advertising hoarding could be.

You are exactly right when you pointed out that there is a whole generation of fans who never experienced the football of the early 90's and before. Not only did you go to the ground to watch a match but there would 101 other things going on around you. Atmospherer was always electric.
As well as a younger generation or two that were not part of this we also have a large following of corporate and glory hunters who just rock up once or twice a season and expect the team to entertain them like they do on MOTD.
This brings me onto a whole new arguement about standing but i won't go there - for now.

We've gone into it a million times on this thread and I'm staunchly in support of its reintroduction.

I'm sure it will come back in some form in the next 10-15 years. It'll be a cheaper way for clubs to add 15-20,000 on their ground capacity, it will segregate those who want to sing and stand and those who want to sit and watch. It will add atmosphere, which will be what clubs will want at the very least for a TV spectacle.

It won't bring back hooliganism, because clubs know everything about who comes through their turnstiles from their bank account details, billing address and e-mail address, as well as CCTV technology.

You won't lose female fans as females stand of their own accord at pop concerts and if they want to sit they'll buy a seated ticket.
