Is Arshavin shit?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

of course that's problem... we all remember what happened when we played bergkamp as the lone striker, don't we?? ok, we won the fa cup, but we took a beating out of it.

c'mon, everybody knows he's got the ability. nobody is crazy to say he scored those 4 goals at anfield and had that wonderful euro run out of luck. it's a matter of playing the guy in the right position (something we do not) and having proper fellas around him, like a proper striker up front

So Wenger is failing to get the best out of him therefore failing everyone involved with the club

Maybe your expectations of Arshavin are just too high...
It seems he produces moment of magic once every 20 games...

Arshavin is an awesome player who is played in the wrong position and doesn't have the support of a hard working midfield. Imagine if he had players in the mould of Essien behind him, scrappin' for everything and winning the ball back so he could play in a free role, behind the striker (which is just made for if you ask me.)

Imagine this sort of team:

------------------------------ Akinfeev ------------------------------

Sagna ----------- Gallas --------------- Verm ------------- Clichy

------------------------------- Essien---------------------------------

-------------- Fabregas ------------------- Song -------------------

----------------------------- Arshavin -------------------------------

--------------- Chamakh -------------- V.Persie -------------------

OK there is no width but you can see what I am getting at. Playmakers like Fabregas and Arshavin have no support at the moment, they are expected to run around like headless chickens waiting for the ball to be won back by players who are not good enough in central midfield. With the above line-up you'd have Essien and Song winning balls and protecting the back line letting players like Cesc and Arshavin to play more freely.

I can see how that would work but I would almost look upon that as a 4-2-2-2.
A creative midfield pair with the two stoppers sat behind them. If they then had the freedom to roam it could work.

You see, it's these kind of threads - along with Brazilian's sarcastic one - that wind up most gooners, be it rose-tinter or pessimist, and diminish the impact of those threads that ask the questions that genuinely need answering. :banghead:

Arshavin has been crap this season. Its not an excuse to say he is being played out of position because he is getting the simple things wrong. He needs to get back to doing the basic things then the flare and skill will show.

To be fair on the lad, he's being played out of position, i dont expect him to bring the ball down from a 70 yard punt from Almunia against John Terry and the likes to be honest.

:x He's being played out of position, another genius idea from wenger, and it seems to me he doesn't have much confidence in some of his teammates?.Maybe if he had better calibre of players around him it might be different??

We can't expect a striker of 5'4" to play effectively, through the middle, in a position where you evidently need to be 6'+.

If we had a 6'+ decent main striker we may see a better Arshavin playing off him!!

Yep, totally agree Frank. There's no disputing he is a class player and he may be playing through injury and totally wasted up top (He needs to be in a Dennis role) but like my school reports always used to say...'Got to try harder'!!
Yep, even if you're playing shit, put a shift in, and run your bollocks off and look like you care... :?

exactly what i've started thinkin lately.
tevez is a good comparison, both small quick footed and have a pretty good shot BUT tevez always runs his nuts off week in week out weather he plays well or not.effort goes along way for me and arsh just dont put in enough he always looks done in from the 1st min

He has about one good game out of five.

But, unlike the majority of the squad, you know he's capable of sheer magic at any given opportunity.

Much like Bergkamp and Pires in their final year at the club. They didn't have great form, but still had a world class trick up their sleeve every once in a while.

I remember seeing the 200th issue of the Gooner, and thinking how out of place Arshavin looked on there next to the genuine Arsenal legends. I think that by the time the 300th issue rolls around, people will look back and think, "What the hell was he doing on there"? Especially if he leaves in the summer, like I expect him to.

The four goals at Anfield was probably the worst thing that could've happened to him. He's lived off the reputation of that performance ever since.
