Who's the man we need?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Who's the man we need?

Post by JakeN13 »

When even Wenger admit we need a player in a certain position it's very obvious. I think we really have to get another central defender in January. It needs to be someone that's accepts to be 3rd choice as Gallas & Toure are too good to be dropped. Got any names of who you think may come in? I got no idea. Or is Djourou good enough? Based on last season I'd say definitely, but haven't seen him much at Birmingham this season, he' played in midfield for a bit as well up there from what I've heard.

What do uou think?

I agree that a Centre Back should be the priority, especially with Kolo off the ACN and Senderos showing no signs of improving. As for who, as is the norm for Arsene it will probably some little heard of player!! Just hope they're better than Stepanov's and Cygan!!!

As you rightly say the problem aint finding a CB it's finding one that will be happy to play bit part. So he has to be old and with only 1 or 2 seasons left in his legs or young and learning.
AW wants players with pace so it has to be a younger player. I like Richards and he's a Gooner but he wont want to be 3rd choice. So my final answer on this question is ......... Aint got a friggin clue. But I'm sure AW does.

Micah Richards. He would be perfect. Senderos out. Djourou 4th choice.

yes Micah would be ideal , he is great as right back as well so essentially he would be cover for toure , gallas and sagna . With injuries , suspensions , ACON , cups , fatigue and bad form he would get plenty of games .

As I said before, Olof Mellberg :D

Olof Mellberg is a realistic target. He is available for free in summer therefore he will be available for a cut price in January. He is a good defender and I think he wouldn’t mind being backup to Gallas and Toure in Arsenal. We’ll never buy a world-class centre-back who will be back-up so a consistent defender like Mellberg fits the bill. He hardly makes any mistakes, is very experienced and is better than Senderos and Djorou.

As southampton gooner said:

Mellberg fits this description. Some guys have said Micah Richards, I'd love him but he'll be a sub for us while he is a leader for Man City so I can't see us buying him, especially when you consider how much he will cost. We are not Chelski, signing players for 20 million and putting them on a bench :)

I thought Mellberg to Juve was practically a done deal?

If Wenger is as keen as me on him, he'll hijack it  As far as I know, Martin O'Neill has said:
Mellberg, who has been linked with several Serie A sides, including Juventus, has filled in at right-back this term and O'Neill has been impressed with the manner in which the Sweden international has adapted to the positional change, his presence adding defensive solidity as well as an occasional attacking threat. "He is trying to get forward," said Villa's manager. "I think his attitude has been fantastic, really, because he is still playing in an alien position."

Interest from overseas is likely to prove attractive to Mellberg but O'Neill is confident that he can persuade the 30-year-old to prolong his stay at Villa Park. "Can we get him to sign? Absolutely," said the Villa manager. "I am trying to make an appointment now. We have got this free week and I will be trying to speak to [Mellberg's and Laursen's] agents. I will either get them over or get them on the phone and we will see where we are."

Seeing that O'Neill is still hopeful of keeping Mellberg, the deal with Juventus is far from being done.
