I'd imagine it's very difficult to organise, move, re-route and/or stop thousands of people without treating them like cattle.

To be honest, I've been to hundreds of football games and I've never had a problem with the police. Not once! My experiences have been that it's usually the ones who are pissed, angry or just smart arses who can't keep their mouths shut that have the trouble with police.

If the police tell me to stop for traffic... I stop. If they say get off the road, I get off the road. If they say move left, I move left. If they say bend over and take it up the arse, I bend over and take it up the arse. I never argue with them because it would be pointless (bit like arguing with a referee after being booked - not going to achieve anthing, is it?) and by keeping to those simple rules (obeying the police without question) I've found that I've managed to avoid trouble quite easily.

To be honest g88ner your rite if you avoid them you'll avoid trouble. But by avoid I mean stay a good 500 yards to a mile away, because the chances are one of em wants trouble, so dont give them an excuse to make it you.

But this what they say goes is rubbish. They are there to uphold the law and control traffic and the flow of people. You may have never argued with a copper because you may never have had the need to. But the idea that they are answerable to no one is completley wrong (remember its us tax payers who pay thier wages). The thought that just disagreeing with a copper is incitement is what is wrong with they're mind frame. In the same way it takes one drunk idiot to kick things off, it just takes one up for the ruck copper to do the same.

I don't want to pick a fight here but I have to take exception to that comment. Does anyone here really think that the police don't pay tax too? They are taxpayers themselves so they're effectively paying their own wages too aren't they. I'm constantly amazed by people that want to have a dig at the police. All I can really say is that those that complain should sign up and do a few years themselves. They then might understand the slightest fucking iota of what a police officers job is. These people put their lives on the line EVERY day that they go to work (even the armed forces can't make that claim) and they do so that we can live in a safe society. A society that for some bizarre reason seems to be hell bent on beating them up. These are usually the very same people that go running to them for help the second somebody says 'boo' to them. I really cannot understand the backward mentality of some people.

Just so you know, the copper wasn't abusing his power. He was doing his job. Something that would be a lot easier if he didn't have idiots getting on his case because they've had a few and think they are untouchable.

Seems to me you knew you weren't going to get an answer good enough for you, so why stay? To antagonise the copper maybe, that's how it looks to me, and I'm sure it did to him and his collegues.

I just don't get this whole anti police stance so many people have. Of course there are a few bad apples as there are in my profession, and as I'm fairly sure there are in the profession of every single poster in this thread. We don't hate every barman, post man, taxi driver etc because a small few have a bad attitude. But for police not only is it acceptable, it seems to be the cool thing to do.

As has already been said, the police do a really really difficult job. It's a shame so few people see that. Everyone has a bad story about the police. Has no one ever had a good experience? Of course you have, so why not focius on that and decide all coppers are good guys?

Mashed potato they are a public service!!! So as far as me paying their wages that is about the service they offer. It’s not private security its policing WE pay them to do US a service, so they more than most are questionable. They are in the business of protecting the public that is their job and what they are paid to do. So when members of the public are harmed, hurt, abused or even killed by the police unjustly then of course they should be questioned and scrutinised.

You seem to have this naive perception that they ALL do their job properly. That they ALL abide by the law. That they ALL stick to procedure. That they ALL just want to help society and the world be a better place. Sorry but you sound like an mp trying to convince me that crime rates are dropping, the police are doing an amazing job fighting crime and the world is a lovely place.

To be honest I've never had a problem with them either, until 2 or 3 months ago they 'arrested' two of my mates for apparent drunk and disorderly just off the town centre, at 11pm. No-one within 50 metres had alcohol on or inside them. These two had to pay fines just to stop it going further, if it was me personally id've not paid and took it as far as I could. The two community supports were bad enough, but the actual two officers who arrived minutes later were complete dickheads, they seemed to revel in arresting two innocent 17 year olds, instead of arresting drug dealers/stoners and thugs. Ever since then I've realised about their stupid everything-by-the-book attitude, and how fucking arrogant alot of them are.

Had both good and bad experience with police


I was trying to meet some mates at the ground before the game and my phone ran out of juice, I asked a copper if he knew where the nearest phone box is, as i need to make a call - he let me use his mobile to make the call - and I was drinking beer from an open bottle in a public place, but he was a reasonable guy.

I think there are some nice people and some complete bastards working for the police and tbh i think it is split down the middle, i just wish the police force did a better job of weeding out the bastards.

There are all types in the job. There are arrogant fuckers, those that are just biding their time waiting for a pension, those that are bastards and those that are genuine decent people. It's a pretty similar situation in most workplaces. I can assure you that the latter type make up the vast majority. Unfortunately the public often encounter them when they are engaged in public order situations. In these times they will act first before a situation develops and this is often construed as needless heavy handedness. In fact what it is is recognising the potential in a situation and acting to stop it before it even starts. They're trained to recognise deliberate acts of antagonism or threatening behaviour etc. The mob handed aspect is taught to them in training. They are told to always outnumber the aggressors etc. This reduces the risk of personal injury to them. There's also the theory that a good initial show of power often causes others to back down before pushing their luck further. These are not things that they do on a whim, they're told to do them and this is why I believe their role and their behaviour is widely misunderstood. There are those in society that will never hear a good word about them and they know that. You simply cannot appeal to everyones taste but take them away and see what happens then!
If the people of this country got behind the police they would be able to be the effective unit we all crave them to be. Until then they will always struggle to deliver.

The police falsfied a charge against my brother once that nearly ruined his whole life (not to mention the jail time he would have got) and all because they assualted and arrested him by misktake (they actaully sprayed him with that pepper spray stuff as well)

Rather than admit the mistake they actually sat down in the canteen made up a very serious charge and then charge him with it whilst he was in custody it was five police invovled - it got to court and only the cctv footage saved him from serious jail time, and he would have never worked in his line of work again.

He was about 21 at the time they tried to write of his whole life rather than say "hey we fucked up"

I still have respect for the majority of them. As spudmasher says there are good ones and bad ones, I know someone who survived the tube bombings and it was the police who help get them out of tunnels.

I have a mate who was totally conned by a mechanic. He bascially charged the earth to replace a part that didn't even need replacing! - but, that's the bad side of mechanics.
