There has been a small debate in the magazine though it did seem to end up with the regular columnists insulting the anonymous potential suers rather then one about the word itself. I was most interested by the star letter and very pleased to see the editor willing to point out where the Highbury Spy was wrong, both for insulting the integrity of Boro and his stance that nothing anti Jew's had happened at Highbury. I hope he will have the good grace to admit his error as he is normally an intelligent and entertaining writer
I wouldn't mind seeing a well written article on the word **** and why some people (like myself) feel it is wrong to use it but it would run the risk of inflaming the debate again, here and on another forum I thought it got a little nasty. Those already here during that time won't be moved but maybe one or two will be made to think and change their minds meaning one or two less people to offend others with an anti Jewish word
Who moderates the moderators?

On a serious note:-
Gooner.ed
Do the moderators have access to everybodies e-mail address?
If so would it not be prudent to drop people a quick explanation of why posts have been modified/deleted to stop complaints appearing on the forum?
On another thread you have said that you are at work and spent all day on the forum. I hope you're not in an open plan office while you're wanking to Gus's posts.

I'm in the corner of the office with nobody behind me so I can get away with being on here all day. I haven't been wanking to Gus posts as he hasn't done any today. I did manage a brief look at a site suggested by Chunky during lunch but cleared my history straight after.

Gus/Doris - I'm far from a prude and I like tits - some of my best friends are in fact tits.I find it very strange that harmless pictures of boobs can't be posted as a bit of fun to cheer the guys up after the defeat last night.!!
Sadly I often read this thread at work and if my boss sees me looking at tits at work my bollocks are on the line.
I'm just going to add a few thoughts about this thread and the censoring of stuff on the forum. For those that don't know, I'm the publisher or owner of The Gooner and was editor of the fanzine until handing over the reigns of Gooner Ed back in 2000.
Firstly, everything which Gooner Ed has already explained is spot on and Dicko has my 100% support in removing the offending thread. She emailed Gus as soon as she'd done it as well so he was aware. I'm also going to drop Gus an email a bit later on explaining the reasoning and I hope he returns. There's no reason to ban people as long as they understand why we do these things and agree to adhere to the (pretty tolerant) rules.
I'm sure everyone is aware, but it's worth re-iterating that the moderators do what they do because we have to have someone looking at the content to make sure we don't get sued and/or taken down. They also do it voluntarily - we might occasionally give them a free copy of The Gooner, but that's it in the way of reward. As the popularity of the forum has increased, it's no great surprise that the time it takes to read through everything has gone up as well, so it's a pretty thankless task and they certainly don't deserve to be criticised. If it ends up that we have moderators deciding not to bother because of criticism or abuse, then the forum will cease to exist. I'd rather it didn't come to that and I'm sure it won't, but it's something which is worth bearing in mind.
If anyone has a problem with what the moderators do, please let me know at [email protected] and I'll happily respond.
Finally, before I bore you all to death, the subject of the y word has come again in this thread. I echo much of Gooner Ed's sentiments and I too would rather not see the word used on the forum. If I had time to go through every post and delete it, then I would and if anyone would like to become a moderator specifically to do that, then get in touch. However, that's probably impractical so I'll live with it. There have been numerous debates in the fanzine over the years about it's use and frankly I got sick and tired of answering the abusive emails and letters which resulted, which is why we haven't tended to give it much coverage lately. There's another letter about it's use in the issue out on Saturday and I'm already gearing myself up for the fall-out!
