Weakest or strongest ever league
Weakest or strongest ever league
I keep reading people say this is the weakest ever premier league. I disagree!! I actually think this is the strongest, most even premier league ever.
There are no whipping boys this year. Everyone has dropped what would normally be easy points. I think this is the most exciting league for many years. And it is anybody's for the taking!!
I can see Birmingham Wigan and Blackburn getting relegated!
Newcastle is 9th 6 points above the relegation zone. This is going to be a very interesting finish to the best league in the world!!

I wpuld say its a bit of both. The traditional 'big four (five)' have got weaker whilst the others have got better.
Yes its true that some of the biggest names in football would rather go to spain but really only to Barca or Real. A lot of the avearge players are still more than happy to come to the premiership for a mid table club for the big money.

Marseille and Copenhagen are hardly world beaters lets be honest and the italian league has been in decline for years. United, Chelsea and Livepool have all got weaker this year and thats why the other teams have "caught up". United's team is very poor, Chelsea dont have any depth whatsover and the same can be said for us. Tottenham and City have some decent players but most of their team is very average. The PL has got weaker as a result of its best teams getting weaker.Arsenal 1991 wrote:As it stands 3 of the 4 english teams in the champions league are favourites to go through and the weakest of those four teams has already beaten the cl and italian holders and the current leaders in the italian league.

But I would agree that there are only 2 better teams in europe.Deise Gooner wrote:Marseille and Copenhagen are hardly world beaters lets be honest and the italian league has been in decline for years. may be maybe not
in 98,we won with 78 points,99 the man u treble winners won the league with 79 points , blackburn were a decent team in 98.newcastle on decline
in 99,chelsea were in with a shout
85points plus has one it for the last years
looks like we are back to a 79/80 point winning season, which is why were in with a shout.
doesn't make it a bad league, weaker teams are not as weak as they were ,no one is adrift at the foot of the table
we have 6 away games and 4 at home,
our away form is good,we are in with a shout

Well, I'd say that only Barcelona and (possibly) Real Madrid have a better chance of winning the Champions League than ManUre and Chelsea. Then you have Inter, Bayern and ourslelves. Hell, even Sp*rs beat AC Milan (top of Serie A) at the San Siro, so we're not struggling against the cream of europe, that's for sure.
I'd say the top teams have regressed a little, as I think previous ManUre teams, Mourinho's Chelsea and our invincibles would have romped this league, but I do think the relegation fodder are no longer fodder... there really aren't many cheap points anymore.
So, it's not as strong as we're used to BUT I do think it's much better than the Premier League of the 90s - definately!
In fact, just look at the Blackburn team than won it in 1995! (Flowers, Le Saux, Berg, Hendry, Henchoz, Batty, Wilcox, Gallacher, Shearer, Sutton, Sherwood, etc. - does anyone really think they'd win it now?? fucking no chance!

The point regarding Blackburn is just nonsense, g88ner. They built a team which beat a technically better team (with more "names") in Man Utd - so therefore, if you put up Man Utd's list of players of that era, you wouldn't I guess be making the same remarks ("fucking no chance"). Therefore, it looks like your just laughing at Blackburn, because in isolation players dare I say like Sherwood don't really fit the football of today.g88ner wrote:Well, I'd say that only Barcelona and (possibly) Real Madrid have a better chance of winning the Champions League than ManUre and Chelsea. If you were to put up Man Utd's team of that season, and could argue that technically they could compete for today's title based upon a list of names, then it follows that Blackburn also could.
