Just out of curiosity, Smoothie, is that the only reason you object to it? Because every single time there is a thread about The Wonder of You, you say something about fat Americans, or fat junkie Americans...some variation on that.
I object to it because, although I like the song, it is a shit anthem because you can't sing it as a terrace song. I'd feel a bit silly objecting to something just because the person singing it was from America or because of their weight. But hey, that's just me.

the song is depressing and should only be played at funerals
I agree with you in the sense that it shouldn't be the anthem, but I don't know how you can say it's depressing! From what you've given away on here, I gather it isn't your taste in music but given the words to the song, I'd hardly say it's depressing! Sure it's a slow song, but "you give me strength to carry on..." isn't depressing!
Still, I'm not sure where I was going with this. I guess I just wanted to know why you were banging on with the 'fat American' prejudice...especially when per person, I think we're catching up with them in terms of obesity!
"Gaaawd save ooour Queeeeeeen!..."

Smoothie's ideal singer of our next anthem?!

I was watching VH1's '90s hour for a while this morning and Pet Shop Boys "Go West" came on and it got me all nostalgic. I remember the days when we used to go 1 up and all of highbury would beat out the old "1 nil to The Arsenal" and the opposition would know that they were not going to get back into that game

My mistake. How could I have overlooked such a timeless classic?

"New name, mon: The Original Nuttah
Take heed and take check

And when we come it's murderation!
All original gangsta man,

Ya hear mi
Come and nuh imitate
Originate!
Wi come fi originate
Alright, mate?
Know what yer doing, mate
[In here we get 'em comin' about kill]
So now I'm 'unna stop talk
Watch mi tell dem, rude bwoy
Watch this!"
Smoothie's ideal Gooner at the Grove...perhaps.
