why are we not buying shay given???

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

"Because it would 'destroy' Fabianski and Szczesney's progress."

C'mon, we all know the score now.

I can understand why we wouldn't be buying him now. Chesney made great progress last season, and Flappy is an ok deputy.

What I can't understand is why we didn't buy him when he left Newcastle.

I think he'd be good back up for Szczesny but that won't be enough to tempt him here.
Apparently we had a goalie (can't remember who) on trial who 'is an improvement on Almunia'. Not difficult, I know. It was in some blog on SS so probably old news and a load of crap but does anyone know if that was true and what happened?

i know ws is turning into a great keeper, but last season both ws and flappy were injured.. ended up with dads army onthe bench and manuel(the worst keeper i have ever seen) between the sticks.
WE NEED A TOP CLASS KEEPER.

Too late for Given now, he is too injury prone due to his shoulder problem, so I would steer clear

Because we have an idiot of a manager who in 15 seasons has bought one good keeper.Anyone who sticks by Almunia as number 1 for 3 seasons with all his cock ups knows fuck all about keepers.I am a big fan of Szczesny and he will be a great keeper one day but he still has a lot to learn and who better to learn from than Given. But Wenger would rather rely on the Polish clown Flappy as number 2 :banghead: We should have bought Given when he left Newcastle

Given did not sign for us from Newcastle because he / his family did not want to move south and because Man City offered him vastly more in terms of wages.

We did try very hard to sign him.

The facts are that we do our 'shopping' either in the bargain bins or we wait until Man City, manure, and Chavski have picked the players they want and we then pick up what is left.

Cahill is a case in point, Bolton are waiting to see if one of the above trump our bid before accepting ours - simples

It might also be due to the fact the guy is on over £90,000 a week.

Someone posted ages ago that they had met Given on a night out after he went to City and asked him why he didnt go to Arsenal - i think he said that he would have loved to move to arsenal but we never came in for him ?

Agreed that Given is past his best. With Stekelenberg off the market now I'd actually start looking into signing Ben Foster, Brum need to sell some players so he shouldn't cost too much. While I think Szczesny will eventually be a great keeper I think he's still got a lot to learn & a lot of mistakes to make & it may make sense for him to make them on loan to a smaller Prem team or a championship team instead of for the first team for whom mistakes would be too costly.

Just like 41 year old Van Der Saar was last season

I would have 61 year old Stevie Wonder in goal infront of Flappy
