The search for an Arsenal ‘anthem’ (18/6)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The search for an Arsenal ‘anthem’ (18/6)

Post by gooner.ed »

usual thread starter... firstly for the regulars, can we continue any necessary debate on the anthem theme here rather than in the long running thread on the 'general chat' section. just so we are all reading off the same hymn sheet as it were.

aside from that, with all the youtube links, this was one painful online editorial to construct, not to mention getting distracted by other options on youtube. anyhow, in a week's time the vote will go live on the referendum. if there's any reason you feel that something's been excluded which you feel matches the criteria (and there are some popular choices that don't 100% even do that, but i've tried to be a bit flexible to include some of the more popular shouts), then let me know here and i will clarify my reasoning. if there's enough force of opinion, the shortlist can be changed to include something else.

aside from that, just hope all the damn links work - there were enough and these are always a minefield for this particular luddite :(

Hi.

Please do not ignore this post because of the fine work that you have done so far in creating a short list. I was driving to Margate of all places when this song came on the radio - as soon as I heard it I thought "Arsenal Anthem" the lyric and sentiment behind it is perfect and is an answer to all those that call us "Highbury Library" - most importantly it can be started by 1 fan - and is just as relevant when 60,432 sing it.

It's 'One Voice' by Barry Manelow - please go and listern to it, there is not a word that does not fit, there is not a lyric that isn't suitable, it's simple to learn and can only sound better shouted rather than sung! Also it is not so well known that it will sound corny.

It's perfect for every member of the fan base and staff as we all have the interest of club at our hearts and we all share that 'One Voice' - please listen to this song - it is the one :D

Maybe It's Because.....

I can't see what's wrong with using maybe it's because i'm a londoner. How many people knew the tune to Volare before Paddy turned up? Surely it is ideal for usage as a footy song, not too short or too long, plenty of scope for some good lyrics, easy tune to remember and builds to a good climax followed by The Arsenal clap clap clap, The Arsenal (ad infinitum!) After all, we used to sing it in general years ago when visiting away grounds!

Please not 'The Impossible Dream' - we'd send people to sleep. Surely it's got to be rousing. From that list, the only one which is anyway near reasonable is the Elvis tune. I know there's a feeling that something ironically naff would catch on - however, I'm afraid most of these songs will just look naff to the youngsters.

For my two penneth - why not Hersham Boys by Sham 69.

Arsenal Anthem

Long overdue but from the shortlist, I like Lean On Me and Bridge Over Troubled Water the best; I also like He Aint Heavy... but the problem with that song is that it's hard to sing and the Hollies come from Liverpool!

It would appear that "My Arse Will Go On" didn't make the shortlist. Boo!

I think I'm going to back "Fools Rush In". I like "Impossible Dream" but it's a bit drab. "Over the Rainbow" is good, but I prefer The King!

Bridge over troubled water
Can’t Help Falling In Love With You
Danny Boy.
These 3 seem to fit everything required. the rest are all good songs but don't tick all the boxes. cant help falling in love with you is my personal favorite but i'm not 100% convinced it sounds right as a footy anthem.

Ahhhh it's just hit me and it's PERFECT. Probably mentioned already haha but here you go. This should be our Anthem. Imagine the Champions League night against AC MIlan in the Semi Final. Our boys in the tunnel hearing this sung by 60,000 gooners

STAND BY ME by BEN E KING

And it's one of those that can continue on into a Capella after the music finishes like You'll Never Walk Alone. We must campaign for this to happen.

A New Anthem

Post by augie »

A lot of fans fail to see the point of an anthem and suggest something too "popish" and I totallly agree with the need for a song that will get the fans singing in unison enough to make the hairs stand on the back of your neck. The song I am suggesting is the B side of one of our cup final songs a few years back(I think it was the b side of our version of mambo no.5) and the song is called A Goal and I think it is sung be Finbarr Wright (though I am open to correction on this). On the face of it this may sound like an odd suggestion and it certainly isn't my type of music as a rule but I suggest that you should all listen to the words - the chorus goes like this;
"A goal a goal
A glorious goal
A goal to beat the best
With strength & skill & fortitude
Our team our surely blessed
And if we played a thousand games still in a hundred years
The very name of Arsenal will ring out in our ears"

At this point Ian Wright starts saying his few words which includes listing our roll of honour over the years and ends up with him saying that many great players have played for the club over the years and he is proud to say that he played for The Arsenal. The song then returns to the above.

I believe 110% that this song is ideal for a club whose fans, board and even manager continue to talk with immense pride about our tradition and history. This song as well as listing all our history also states that well into the future the very name of Arsenal will still be prominent. There is no doubt that we need a strong slowish anthem that will unite our fans as the teams come out of the tunnel and the song needs to point out to the opposition that there are now facing The Arsenal - This song can do all that

From the list I would go for Danny Boy as people know it and its easy to learn, however we should listen to suggestions out there first

I would like to throw a novelty one into the ring and before it is ridiculed please read the words as i reckon they have more meaning to us then the other songs, It is called "We All Stand together" AKA Rupert the bear and THE FROG SONG! by Sir Paul McCartney

Other sets of supporters are gonna take the mick out of us for trying to do this so if we adopted this song as our anthem we are getting in first with the mickey taking....

We All Stand together AKA The Frog song by Paul McCartney

Win or lose, sink or swim
One thing is certain, we'll never give in
Side by side, hand in hand
We all stand together

Play the game, fight the fight
But what's the point on a beautiful night
Arm in arm, hand in hand
We all stand together

La la la la la la la la
Keeping us warm in the night
La la la la la la la la la la la
Walk in the light
You'll get it right

La la la la la la la la
Keeping us warm in the night
La la la la la la la la la la la
Walk in the light
You'll get it right

Win or lose, sink or swim
One thing is certain, we'll never give in
Side by side, hand in hand
We all stand together

WE ALL STAND TOGETHER

Wacky enough to work i think, but just a suggestion

Arsenal anthem

Post by gunner613 »

short, n concise. i can't think of another song that touches on the special relationship between the players and fans.

Nat King Cole:Unforgettable

Unforgettable, that's what you are
Unforgettable though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more

Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too

<instrumental interlude>
No never before
has someone been more ooh

Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too

peace
