Marathon/Running Thread

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

Marathon/Running Thread

Post by HashKads »

After feeling inspired by Frank's marathon run I've been toying with the idea of running next year's marathon. No I've been thinking of doing it for a while really. So I've signed up along with my lady of doing the Royal Parks Foundation half marathon in October with the view to doing full marathon in April.

I know Bournemouth Red is interested, just wanted to know if there are any other runners on here for any advice/tips etc?

Well done Sir. Good idea to create a running thread. There is actually a great one on RAWK. I'll give you my top 5 tips to get us started.

1) Get proper running trainers fitted in a specialist shop. They will do gait analysis etc. There's nothing to stop you going through the whole analysis part then saying you need to go and get your wallet.... Then buy them on-line for a fraction of the price.
2) Build up slowly. I started doing 3 x 10km per week, then the long run on the weekend. Got up to a maximum of 20 miles. :x
3) Always vaseline parts that may chafe before your run.
4) Buy yourself a GPS watch. This will tell you for certain how far you've run and it will also give you your speed and splits per mile / km. This is great for pacing etc.
5) The London Marathon ballot opens tomorrow and is capped at the first 125,000. Therefore i would say you need to register tomorrow to get into the ballot. Otherwise you're looking at charity places which require £1,500 mimimum sponsorship.

Good luck.

Get a Garmin GPS watch - they are the nuts. As you know my mum is a keen runner, selected one for my old man to give her at Xmas and now she's figured it out she says it's absolutely amazing. I'll get the model name if you want.

You may want to think about joining a running club if you'd be doing most training runs alone, the social side might help to keep you motivated/distracted while running, but if you're doing it with your gf that covers it I guess.

As Frank Butcher says, proper running shoes, tailored specifically for you, are a must. I can ask and see where the best places in Central London are.

Eat properly - know you don't drink a lot but leave out the frozen fucking yogurt and maybe get protein shakes, and when you actually do a long run carbo-load... Leave out the shit as well, don't know what your diets like but for example I now have chicken breast, turkey or tuna/swordfish five times a week, and very rarely eat potatoes, sweet potatoes instead, much much better for you. Tastier too. You might wanna try brown rice instead of white?

Sort out a training plan, maybe a bit of competition with the mrs? But figure out a plan as frank says. Also, in all seriousness, vaseline/chest tape is a good shout. Get some good running gloves, compression shorts, and skins (upper and lower body if I was you) for cold runs too.

Oh yeah, and I'll volunteer to give you massages to help with any stress or muscle tightness.

Diet

As SWL says, diet is vital.

Carb load for five days before a big run, not just the night before.

If you drink tea/coffee with milk then stop and drink it without milk or with maybe a bit of honey, or herbal teas like rosehip and horsetail.

Increase your vitamin C intake from now on, if you have too much your body will just pee it out.

You might want to take a sports vitamin/mineral supplement such as Wellman but get medical advice as too much of certain vitamins can make you ill.

The Wall

Said to be caused by body reaching end of it's readily available glucose/carb store.
Avoid it or minimise effects by both carb loading, and taking carbs and some protein on board during the race. They have these very sweet runners gels available which are good.

Injuries

Do not mess about. If something starts hurting whilst running, then stop. Get it seen to by a physio or osteopath.

Warm Up Warm Down and Stretches.

Vital.

OBG's Marathon Running Tip No 1.

Before you do anything else - buy a LARGE JAR of Vaseline (if you don't already have one that is! )

Then rub it on yer raspberries to make sure your running vest doesn't make em Red Raw!....

My gf is a pretty decent marathon runner 3hrs 37 last weekend. She smokes 20 a day, and eats far more shit than I do! She does alot of training to be fair but I swear some people are just cut for running more than others! Gonna stick my name down for the ballot if it's open still and see what happens!

There's 86 pubs on the route round, this could be my downfall

Okie Dokie Flashy mate!

OBG's Marathon Running Tip No 2.

Eat large amounts of protein (Chicken/Tuna etc) AFTER extensive running/ training sessions, which will aid in recovering from any niggles or injuries - but if you're a Veggie - then you'll need to find a substitute - so in this case it has to be the thing with the next highest protein content which would be Male Sperm.

   Thanks for all the hints and tips guys. Really appreciated.

Fully registered for the half marathon now, so no turning back  :barscarf:

Entered the ballot on Monday for the London Marathon too, find out in October if I've got a place. Otherwise, as Frank says minimum £1500 to be raised.

Does anyone know the best place to get some training plans and good diets to follow?
