It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

beer in europe - WTF???

Post by brazilianGOONER »

i mean, what the fuck is wrong with you people? i always heard germany and belgium were the place for great beer, and england was the place for ale lovers like myself.

belgian beers are too sweet, too alcoholic - i doubt anyone can drink 5 pints of those tripel or dubel bullshit without feeling they have just eaten a cake made of condensed milk, sugar and erm, more sugar. it's crap. even pilsners like leffe are too sweet. "champagnoise" beer is the biggest crap ever - go and have a champagne then :banghead:

in 15 days in germany i couldn't find a single fucking place, be it a restaurant, bar or bier garten, where i could drink anything different than pilsner/weissbier/dunkel, and the funny thing is that it was fucking hot during those couples of weeks and still the beer is served WARM. fucking hell, it was warmer than my piss. ok, the pilsners are good (for a fooking warm pilsner), but it was a major letoff. not to mention that most people drink their beer with a fucking lemon in it! :-? i looked for irish pubs everywhere and whenever i could find a cold kilkenny i felt like in heaven again.

and in the only time i went to london, i found myself inside pubs with dozens of beautiful options like many different types of Fuller's', Harviestouns, Young's', and still the vast majority of people around me were drinking a shit pilsner (like carlsberg, stella artois or the alike) or even worse, fucking cider!!!! :banghead:

what the hell is wrong with you people? doesn't anyone like a good pint of IPA or red ale anymore??

I think Lager got more popular in the Uk in the early 1970's.
It was marketed well as a "Cool Trendy" beer.
Certainly when I grew up, Ales and Bitters were seen as drinks for old men, and I think this image still exists.

But a lot of lager is very average in taste and I much prefer ales and bitters and Guinness/Murphys, and I think people are slowly going back to drinking these beers.

germans can't put yeast in their beer, so the variety is non existent. some german beers are quite good, tho. but i drink them cold.

no mate, they actually do put yeast. i know the reiheitsgebot says it's only water, malt and hops, but it's impossible to make big production beer with natural fermentation, so they allow yeast as long as it's not mixed with anything else. very few microbreweries do it the old way - with no yeast - but to be honest every single one of them i tried so far is shit. you have to leave the tanks open, and the beer usually gets a bit contaminated.

and i'd like to understand why bother with the purity law when most people mix lemons or some weird juices with their beer

but i agree, german beer is good but they all taste similar. and the purity law is not an excuse, as i've always brewed beer with only the 4 ingredients, and we managed to make extremely different beers out of it - dark and dry stouts, sweet and fruity golden ales, hoppy IPAs, and so on.
