As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Villa have approached the FA to be allowed to take part in a safe standing trial, and their local MP has submitted a motion to the Commons to change the Law to allow it.
Story was in the Mirror.
I am going to be so gutted if we ever get standing back - it will be just another reason to hate leaving our beautiful historic home behind for no good reason. Especially with the scousers getting the green light from their council to compulsory purchase homes behind their stand to build a bigger stand - like we could of done with the West Stand ...
I really hope they get the go ahead, I signed the petition for safer standing being run by the FSF today Im confident Arsenal will follow suit if the Villa trial goes well, they wont miss an opportunity to get more revenue in.
Fair play to em, but they won't be able to trial it until the Government deems it no longer illegal right? And I don't see that happening anytime soon unfortunately.
I think it will be introduced eventually but not for at least ten, and possibly twenty years or so...

where there's a will...
now's the time to email your MP and the Minister or PM, and get your non-Arsenal supporting mates to do it.
The smaller clubs in the PL will jump on board this i reckon as it improves the atmosphere and encourages 'casual' attendance so their crowds will pick up.
I've seen a couple of comments today that thinks that funnily enough family enclosures may be part of any trials - if so good, if it means that a bloke can take his sons for cheaper then we've got to be for that. except at WHL obviously, that's borderline child abuse imho.

Our fans didnt sit down all game
Their fans didn't sit down all game
To the best of my knowledge, no one died
And herein lies the madness. Tens of thousands of fans stand in both the home & away sections at every game, every weekend, up & down the country. Yet the politicians either choose to deliberately ignore this or are really so ignorant about what they're voting on that they actually believe everyone sits in their seats for 90 mins.
And of course the current set up is inherently more dangerous than the one that we all want to see brought in, it's mental. I'm sure we all have tales, bruises & cuts to show off from where we've tumbled down rows of shin-high seats after goals have been scored. That's not gonna happen if you bring in rail-style safe standing!

I think that's one of the points in the commons legal petition. Villa have commented that despite (heavyhanded) stewarding that they are unable to make people sit down at Villa Park.
It's also being pointed out that under EU law, football is being discriminated against because other sports such as Rugby are permitted to provide standing terraces - and standing terraces are not illegal as Italy and Germany permit them for League games.

Have you ever walked around anfield....? No surprise that they would be able to compulsory purchase those houses..... Would doubt that any would be worth more than £10k & last time I was there most seemed to be boarded up.....

Get no help from EU law mate, not in a million years are the Parliament/Commission going to rule that banning standing is unlawful.
I have only experience terracing at less-than-heaving lower league grounds, but have to say if it isn't a problem for them why do clubs of a similar size need to comply just because they're in the PL?
What I will say about the Villa example is that it will be no doubt met with the defence that they might be standing but it's safer than in the past because each person is allocated a specific seat to stand in.

1) - Fuck the EU
2) In Austria, they have these things like big town bus stops used to have. A metal rail that had a "seat" number on it to allocate your standing place, but a pull out seat for the CL and the Channel 5 cup to meet UEFA standards. An idea, maybe? Knowing Arsenal, it would still cost £40 a ticket standing

yes, but currently its discrimination by the UK gov. as they allow it at their Rugby where the farquar MP's stand in their barbour jackets and flat caps
they either have to ban it at all sporting events or none, is my point.

In all seriousness that's probably the perception MEPs have of British football fans. There's no way a discrimination case would get anywhere at all, because even if somebody could claim to be directly effected enough (no) somebody at the EU would just mention Heysel and Hillsborough and there you have it, rule justified. I'm not saying I agree with it, just that that's the way it is.
