Arsenal could have afforded Torres (21/3)
http://www.onlinegooner.com/exclusive/index.php?id=565
usual thread starter… A little harsh on Adebayor, but I do accept the point made. Critically, age would not have counted against Torres, so it was really to do with price. Arsenal have £69m now available for the manager. That hasn’t all appeared since last summer. We could have got the Spaniard and that would have put us on another level. Still, Anfield’s the natural destination of most Spaniards these days, so it was no surprise he went there.
Do you think he’d have chosen Arsenal if Wenger went in for him?
Is £27m too much to spend on a forward?

you cant put a price on winning the league, champions league etc,,
adebayor has had a good season but he's not as good as he thinks he is,, rvp might never see 5 games in a row and bendtner well we wait and see,, torres probably wouldnt have signed for us anyway so best let that one go
but now mr wenger its up to you,, spend some money now or wait till more youngsters come of age,,
me,, football is in the now and i would rather be smiling watching arsenal win the league or cl then thinking about all the money he's saving the club and what good youth team we have

i agree with regarding ade. i would score with the amount of chances this team creates.
i think arsene is just being patient. although i find it difficult.. he knows he's got the players coming through and instead of spending millions just for the sake, he will wait for the kids.
i don't think our problems have been not buying. i think our problem has been the players we have played not being good enough.
berty and senderos are not world class.
to compete with mega bucks man-ure and chelski you need world class players and these two are not good enough.
it took arsene a couple of years to see what everybody else saw with cygan now he is doing the same with senderos.
berty has been a great servant to this club but i'm afraid he no longer meets the criteria.
senderos makes too many mistakes for my liking. he gets caught the wrong side.waves his arms about instead of covering first and appealing later. jumps in when he should stand back. he's also very indecisive. hesitates too much.
i said at the start of the season you don't win anything with average players like senderos. hope i'm wrong.

Very good article. We definitely should have signed Torres. No excuses. He wouldn't disturb our dressing room's "spirit" (who cares anyway, Bendtner and Adebayor are having fights) we had and still have the money and he is quality... and a special extra reason for Wenger, he is very young too. He is better than all of our strikers in my opinion.
I don't think 27 million is too much to spend on a world-class striker. If you have the money and you need a player, you should buy the best. That is what we should have done and should do in future.

When Arsene refers to affording players I think that it is their wage demands.
When there was a post a few weeks back about the 50m top paid players...no arsenal palyers!
Therefore Torres for example earns at least £10k per week more than any other player at Arsenal. That makes £500k per player per year.
Assuming is they come in on a bigger wage most of our players would want a pay rise. Times that by our first team squad of say 25 players that means £13.5 per year.
That is why we 'can't afford players'

every player knows there are players at there club who earn more and less then them

and what price do you put on winning the league

We would never have gone in for Torres, yes he is a great player but unfortunately Wenger does not buy players that are widely recognised as being great. We all know he prefers to buy unknowns that he can pick up for bargain basement prices in the hope that they turn out good and we can then sell them onto one of the BIG clubs. It really pisses me off but I have to accept that this is the way it is for our club and as long as we qualify for the Champions League each year, I think our board will be content regardless of whether or not we win fuck all

We should definitely have bid for Torres at the start of the season. Everyone agreed he was sensational at A Madrid - I watched him lots of times on La Liga on Sky - and he now looks as if he would have fitted in well at Arsenal. However, the painful truth is that we don't have Torres but we can't afford to sit back and admire him in a couple of weeks time...

I am saying that if we brought Torres in or anyother for that matter and put them on £100k per week then when another club came in for Fabregas or when it came to contract negs he would want to be put on a par. Gallas and similar players would be looking for a pay rise. Take Flamster for example, he has been offered £55k but wants £80k, if we had a player on £100k then he would want more.rebel gooner wrote:or you saying that all 25 would want a raise of 10gFabby is a Foot (Leg-end) wrote:When Arsene refers to affording players I think that it is their wage demands.

I agree what price do you put on the league but I want Arsenal to be sustainable as well as sucessful. Would love to win it this season and if we had Torres then we might be in a better position. Remember Leeds though, when you start spending you have to suceed, if three years ago we had gone mad in the transfer market then has two years of 4th place we could have been in serious trouble.
Don't forget Arsene has always said next season will be when we reach our potential. Provided we keep Flamster and improve in a couple of areas then next season we will be awesome.
We need to remember that the prem is so competitive, this is not scotland, winning is great but it needs to be sustainable

We are in a different situation to Leeds. I agree that if we done that three years ago when we didn't have much transfer funds, we might have been in trouble. But now, we are in a different situation altogether. We have 70 million according to many reliable sources, not such as The Sun, but such as our board members and Arsene himself. We are in situation like Barcelona where we can spend money to strengthen out team without any consequences. And it is clear, we could do with some signings.Fabby is a Foot (Leg-end) wrote:I agree what price do you put on the league but I want Arsenal to be sustainable as well as sucessful. id say pretty accurate comments on Ade...hes done well while the midfield have been firing but has shown wanting in the business end of things when we need him. I wonder if wenger will still say he doesnt need a striker if Ade continues to return sweet FA in games when a bit quality would seperate us from the Boro's of the PL!?
a lot is riding on RVP for the rest of the season!!
