THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The majority of fans don't care too much about the football being played, it's beating your rivals and winning trophies because at the end of the day, you can play crap and still win 1-0. Under Wenger, we are gradually seeing poorer football with NO end product.......and still some people defend him!!?? Mind boggling.
Agree too. Winning is a form of entertainment in itself. Most of us want the excitement of big games and winning football rather than pretty football. Winning football is what creates the big occassions where games have meaning. And they are far more entertaining than the chase for 4th.

The aesthetics of football is often overplayed from a fans viewpoint. And I hate hearing Arsenal fans of the modern era mocking the oppositions style of play it makes us sound as pathetic as the Spurs and West Ham fans did when they did the same to us in the 80s.

Living in a sp*rs loving town during the 80's and 90's was fantastic. I used to hear all the time from scum fans how they played attractive football, its all they had while we piled up the trophies. These days you hear Gooners saying those very same things :banghead: I remember the Arsenal way was to win at all costs and fuck whether it was entertaining or not.

Im embarrassed now when i hear our own fans talking like sp*rs fans 20 years ago  and as augie said i'd be quite happy to lose those sorts of fans

Exactly! And thats how it should be! Its that meddling Wenger that has brought this new mentality into our support. For a good few years he had it right where we had both winning football and entertainment but give me the former over the latter every time if we have to choose just one!

Where is that mental strength you continue to talk about you senile old c**t ?   :banghead: :cussing:
I thought Wenger was disgraceful after the Blackburn game. He basically said the only thing he was responsible for was the team selection and that there was nothing wrong with the team he selected. In other words, he was telling us that it wasnt his fault. This coward will protect himself even if it means contradicting what he's been saying for years - which is exactly what he did by citing mental issues as the reason we lost.

I would love to hear a journalist say to him '' Arsene, you have told us this is your best squad ever, you remind us that they are all internationals, that their mental strength is exceptional and you say that they are all desperate to do well ... yet they reguarly fail to perform ... have you ever considered that the problem is you? I used to love hearing the opposition fans sing "boring, boring Arsenal".

The thing is it was only boring to them.
To me a good, solid, defensive display, hard graft and a 1-0 win is great entertainment.

Totally agree mate. There is something beautiful about seeing Adams, Bould, Keown and the rest defending

Wenger should he stay or should he go?

http://www.thefootballnetwork.net/main/ ... 181437.htm

Monsieur Wenger’s reluctance to analyse (and try and neutralise) the opposition or employ sophisticated teams of analysts is a principled outcome of his footballing philosophy. In desperation, he had used such methods in his depleted team’s defeat of Manchester United in the 2005 Cup Final (on penalties, very much against the run of play), but his last trophy success still, it is said, tasted sour. There was little interest in the opposition, one year later, ahead of the Champions League Final defeat to Barcelona. Mr Mourinho’s success has been based on the sophisticated scouting of adversaries and the tailoring of coaching on the training pitch to nullify individual players strengths and exploit their weaknesses. Such efforts continue at Chelsea and it was recently revealed just how useful such dossiers can be.

Mr Auclair also noted Monsieur Wenger’s tactical limitations in respect of substitutions and a plan ‘B’. The defeats against Bayern and Blackburn were typical in that change was, once again, resisted until around the 70th minute of the matches. Rival managers such as Messrs Mourinho, Mancini and Ferguson have often been rather more ruthless and proactive when plans go awry and players seriously underperforming have even been withdrawn, despite being fit, even before half-time. Mr Bould was reported to have raged at the players after the home defeat to Swansea in a furious dressing room inquest.

Monsieur Wenger normally prefers a more patient and kindly paternalistic approach. Nevertheless, he can become ruthless and has not been afraid to eventually freeze out a number of players. However, it has been suggested that this, and the dramatic loss of form of a number of players, is evidence that his motivational skills also have their limitations.

a better question would be - Arsene, why do we win only half our home games ?

we used to win about 70% at Highbury.

That's because we're such terrible fans.....unlike those wonderful patient tolerant fans at Liverpool (booing Hodgson after 3 months...FACT), Newcastle (booing Allardyce after 3 months...FACT), Man U (demanding Fergie out in 2003....FACT).

We're fucking awful we are. How dare 200 people in the ground have a tiny groan about a shit player like Eboue once every 5 years
