RIP Iain Banks - only 59!

I have not read any of his regular books but have read a few of his
Iain M.Banks Sci-Fi books which were superb.
I disliked him personally when he banned his books from being translated into Hebrew.
I hope he is now in heaven, where the official language is ....Hebrew, and he is reading aloud from his books in Hebrew to an appreciative audience.

Have to agree with you rosie.
Although he had cancer, it is still a shock. Very sad news as he was one of my sporting hero's.
He wasn't always an affable chap and I remember back in the mid 70's he had an air of menace about him.
I think that the time when Sheikh Mohammed took his horses from the yard, perhaps as many as 150 or so, was when we witnessed a more humble Cecil.
What with the doping going on at the sheikh's Godolphin set up, perhaps Mr Cecil declined to do what the sheikh wanted and paid a price?
Anyhow, I shall remember him making Steve Cauthen, Joe Mercer champion jocks. I will remember Le moss and Ardross, Diesis and others, and I am grateful for his handling of Frankel.

If anyone has ever seen a better TV show than The Sopranos let me know, because I haven't.

Tragic loss. A fantastic actor. Agreed The Sopranos was the greatest ever TV show. Fantastic viewing, acting, direction, music, storylines - it had everything. And a key part of it all was Gandolfini's portrayal of Tony S. He managed to make an absolute psychotic, murdering, scumbag - who was also a loving family man - not only very very believable but also fairly likeable and sympathetic! No mean feat.

Also loved his portrayal of the hitman that kicks the shit out of Alabama in True Romance. He oozed utter sinister depravity and violence from every pore. The bit where he describes killing thusly, "Now... shit... now I do it just to watch their fuckin' expression change" with that blank yet psychotic gaze on his face is one of the most memorable moments from a film full of very memorable scenes, dialogue and moments.

51 - too young.

How'd you miss it up to now, mate? I've watched it through 3 times and will now begin tonight to watch it through a 4th time.

And it just gets better and better with each season. Only show that comes close for me is Breaking Bad but the Sopranos is the greatest show of all time.

Treme is the next best show I have seen to The Sopranos, then The Wire takes third place.
Breaking Bad a crazy intense adrenaline rush, but not on the level of The Sopranos.

knew Alister from many years back when I went to a couple of Rangers matches at Ibrox with him, lost touch as this was years before mobile phones but knew he regularly wrote pieces for the Gooner fanzine and knew that he had not been well for quite some time.

Hmmm...

I found Treme to be very "cheaply" written. So many cliched and one dimensional characters... I like conflict in my characters, multi-dimensional people like in the real world. No one is all good, just as no one is all bad, it's shades of good or bad and 99.99% of all people fall somewhere in the middle.

2. Breaking Bad
3. CHiPs
4. Dexter
5. The Wire

CHiPs was my favourite show as a kid. Good old Ponch and his teeth. I believe they had their own trailer and limo service on that show.
