Things is JD, the wern't cheap (back then) at about £5m apiece, plus, anyone who'd watched them could see they were good players. Overmars, in particular had obvious quality.
Sanogo is a youth international with no discernable pedigree, and he's our only signing. If we were picking up Mata, for example, after serious cruciate damage then that might be a better comparison.

Had Wenger been afraid of spending some money in those years and insisted that the previous year's squad was good enough he wouldn't have had half the success he has done. He was willing to spend £11m on Wiltord, £7m on Overmars, £8m on Jeffers, £7m on Lauren and £10m on Henry - and doubling those fees would give you a more realistic estimate of that sort of value in today's market.
And if you want to say that this proves Wenger delivers success when he has money to spend, why doesn't he fucking spend it? The excuse that his hands are tied by the board wore thin years ago.
I agree, Wenger used to be quite happy to flash the cash - quite egregiously in some cases (Jeffers, Wright etc). He now seems to be wilfully sticking to his "over-heated" and "no value" transfer market soundbites to justify picking up the next average Francophone kid for peanuts - then remunerating them to a level WAAAAYYY above their ability.
