SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not sign

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Kevin Keegan moment -

I'd LOVE IT to be unveiled at 5:30pm, the same time as the 'Daily Arsenal' was on Talksh1te radio.

Stick that up your arse, Durham. You give gingers a BAD name

Any second now, Ozil to be confirmed.
Any second.
Could be this one coming up the road.
It's near around the bend.
Let's ask it!
"Are you the second in which Ozil will be confirmed?"
"Not meself, sorry mate, keep a watch, though. I reckon the correct one will be along directly."

So that's it then.
The second in which Ozil will be confirmed will be along any time now.

This is exactly what we've been calling on the club to do and still there are people fucking moaning. 200k a week? We've easily saved that and then some on wages through the utter dross we've got rid of this window. Fat boy arshavin and the forehead between must of been about 170k a week, I'd take ozil over those two jokers any day of the week. Ozil will bring in far more revenue to the club through merchandising and renewed interest in club level tickets then having 4 Bendtner's stinking out the place will ever manage.

Now I'm hearing the usual mob of Arsenal haters are trotting out guff about him not being the 'type' of player we need. Anyone who watched us in the big games last season knows we were lacking a top quality attacking spark. Cazorla is class but seemed to fade at times last season, wilshere is injury plagued and lacking end product at this stage of his career.

I'd still like to see a striker come in and if we can get both of those deals done then I'm a happy camper :barscarf:

You are joking right ? :? Are you telling me that you would be happy to have Chesney and flaps as your only options for the keepers spot this season ?

Would be a hell of a signing - I'd have to admit to being wrong on several counts if it does go through. Didn't think Wenger would spend that sort of money and didn't think we could dream of nicking a player of his quality - it's the type of signing that even Citeh, United and Chelsea have been dreaming of after a summer of playing second fiddle to Real, Barca, Monaco, PSG and Bayern. If a player of this calibre becomes available and you can afford him, sign him up!

That said, it wouldn't vindicate our action in this window. As amazing as Ozil is and whilst I would be absolutely delighted at him joining, it's going to see either him or more likely Cazorla shunted out to the left wing and we're simply not capable of winning the league with Szczesny in goal and Giroud as a lone striker every week. Chelsea last season showed that you can have a plethora of quality attacking midfielders but without a quality striker to finish the chances you're severely limiting yourself.

Also bemuses me that Wenger will pay £42m for Ozil (no complaints about price from me) but we pissed around when we could have tied up the Higuain deal for a player we have far greater need for and with a fantastic record and attributes for about £30m.

But this is in no way a complaint about the prospective signing of a truly world class player - it's a complaint at the neglect of other areas.

spendsum4uckingmoney wrote:Complete panic buy IMO. I don't doubt he is talented but we have well and truly paid over the odds.
In the current transfer market climate, £40m for Ozil is good business. He is only 24, he has proven himself in a top club and he has good resale value.
spendsum4uckingmoney wrote:That's just it though the fee was only so high to appease us and get us off Wengers' back. The actual fee makes no sense. How on earth did it get to 42m?

Javi Martinez costed 32m
Cesc costed 25m
Fernandinho 32m
Falcao 40m to Atletico
Fernandinho? He is a 28-year-old DM and he has never played in a top European league. Also he only has five caps for Brazil and none of those games were competitive.

Javi Martinez is a DM so naturally he's going to be cheaper than a playmaker.

Falcao was a Porto player so not 100% proven in a top league. This summer he moved to Monaco for £52m, two years is a long time in football.

As for Cesc? We got ripped off for him. Everyone knows that, even Barca admitted it:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... ident.html

Ozil is 24 and has played as a number 10 for Real Madrid for three seasons now. And he's represented Germany in the World Cup and the Euros.

One can easily argue that Ozil is not exactly what we need right now and I would agree to a certain extent. But to claim Ozil is too expensive or a rip off? I have to disagree.

Have to agree with a couple of other posters that if we do eventually sign Ozil then the price does seem a bit steep, and if that is the only super quality signing we make then Wenger has once again failed to do what is required. Still think theres a chance of this fucking up yet again and we wont sign him!
