I imagine that the Wenger argument for keeping Rosicky is that as he's been injured for so long, he's not really 33.augie wrote:spendsum4uckingmoney wrote:We shouldn't have given Ros a new deal. We have a pileup of midfielders now and we still need a holding midfielder.
Absolutely agree 110% and I argued that at the time - I like rosicky as a player (and have done since he played us at highbury for Sparta prague) and I will say that he brings much needed tempo to our game, BUT, there is absolutely no point in keeping him, ozil and cazorla. Wenker has never understood the concept of building a balanced squad as opposed to buying good individual players and that is why we will continue to see periods where we have too many midfielders and not enough defenders or strikers or, as was the case a few years ago, NO decent keeper

I like the player a lot. BUT. Why we renewed his contract given his age and the fact that we have Öz and Caz to play on that position and overall amount of midfield players. Then we are not ready to give Sagna new deal on position we really lack cover. This logic is beyond mespendsum4uckingmoney wrote:We shouldn't have given Ros a new deal. Of course, we don't have any idea what Sagna is demanding... but it can't be that much that it wouldn't be sensible from our part.
Re: SUMMER 2014 TRANSFER THREAD
Sagna was offered a new deal, it was initially for a year then it was increased to 2 yrs but he wants to go to City as they are offering him the 3yrs at £100k. TR7 accepted less than that to keep playing. In this instance don't think there's much you can do if a player wants to earn that much money elsewhere. Chavvy Terry and fat frank both took paycuts to play on at chavski but no chance Sagna will do that.
Serge Aurier got into the Ligue 1 team of the year and will probably cost a lot less, I am willing to accept that if we are going to spend proper money on marquee signings but that's a big if.......
Anyone seen Aurier play, is he that good, because if he is than at 21, that's a good age to get him.
I'd be happy with Calum Chambers from the Saints he's valued at just £10million.

Re: SUMMER 2014 TRANSFER THREAD
I'd just blow £30 million on Javi Martinez and £10 million on Remy.
Jenkinson and FLAMINI would battle it out for RB
People need to remember that we'll have Walcott back, Ramsey is not going through any purple patch and will be just as good next year, Wilshere (though it's been his most productive season to date) is going to be much better next season after the emergence of Ramsey, Chamberlain shouldn't be so unlucky to miss another 5 months of the season again and Giroud should at least get 20 goals next year.
People are going on as if the RB position is going to cost us the league next year...

Re: SUMMER 2014 TRANSFER THREAD
Planning based on best case scenario is pure folly.
Its always easy to say A, B and C should improve, X, Y and Z shouldn't be injured so much. But we have to be realistic about it, players are going to underperform and players are going to get injured. And when that happens we will be found wanting again without more reinforcements.
As I've said before we don't have one or two 'key players' like other clubs but possibly 6 or 7, all of whom we'll really miss if they miss any period of time. This - and a lack of tactical versatility - only serves to make our injury problems worse. Ramsey - overplayed as even Wenger admitted. Ozil - barely had a rest until he unsurprisingly picked up a muscular injury. Giroud - overplayed and huge burden on him on the pitch in terms of work rate. Walcott - rushed back from a serious injury and got crocked after playing 5 full 90 mins in 2 or 3 weeks. I personally think Arteta and Wilshere have both been rushed back from injuries over the last few years and their form and fitness continues to suffer as a result.

hopefully but as ever a lot of ifs.
the squad that failed this year as was too small to cope with injuries, plus remy/martinez wont do much better. the key position is a significant improvement on giroud.

Re: SUMMER 2014 TRANSFER THREAD
finishing 4th next year really will be an achievement....
based on previous years, any plans we do have will be scuppered by a long injury to at least two players - this year it will probably be kos or per, Giroud, and Ox again.
i dread to think that walcott will be injured for a 3rd year...

Well Augs guess what....that's his release clause that Sociedad have set for him. Around £25-£30m. That's what THEY believe to be his value.augie wrote:1989 wrote:It's only a "paltry 4m" for US. Ah stop.......last summer the cannibal was worth £40m and you are saying that vela is worth £25-£30m ??![]()
I liked vela and had real hopes that he was gonna be a star for us but in time I had to accept that he was too light and unable to hack the physical nature of english football, and I suggest that you accept that too. I dont agree with, but can understand, the club/manager/fans wanting to stick to signing players they know but that only works if they were a success first time around and vela most certainly wasnt - fans wanting to cling to past glories is all well and good but clinging to past failures is ridiculous
As for clinging to past failures, if only the Chavs were put off signing Matic due to his first spell. Bugger.

Re: SUMMER 2014 TRANSFER THREAD
Quite a difference in his physical size now that he is a 25 year old man and not a lightweight teenager. He obviously has improved his play during the interim , however it all depends how he is to be played as to whether he will be a success second timew around.

no they don't. release clauses are always set way above the true value of a player to deter bidders. its just that some clubs can afford to activate them and pay way over the odds without blinking and or some players kick on massively whilst still having a release clause in their contract that doesn't reflect there new found 'ability' so the clubs that own them haven't had a chance to offer them a new deal with a new release clause set...see mata's low release clause when he was originally in spain before it expired.

So is that Martinez definitely off is this happens? Please Wenger, don't be a ****, go get the man.spendsum4uckingmoney wrote:I fear for next season I really do. It would be madness if Bayern replace Martinez with Luiz - have they not seen Sideshow Bob play before?gp543 wrote:So is that Martinez definitely off is this happens? The only thing he has over Martinez is the ability to balloon free kicks and a penchant for rash challenges followed by red cards.
Mandzukic is nothing special anyway, just your typical targetman.

Lots of fresh rumours of Sagna going to City. We really shouldn't have lost him, but to have another good player go to City is just a joke.
