I agree NB, The Wire was simpy brilliant. I was hovering around HMV waiting for a train or the like in '06 and bought series 1 on a whim, without knowing anything about it and quickly became essential viewing.

David Simon created something quite unique in that it didn't try to say "OK, these guys are bad and these other guys are good", but rather tried to show how ayone could do pretty much anything depending on their circumstances. Setting in in a provicial city (Baltimore) also helped as I tire of seeing New York/LA in every other show.

Season 5 I think was abit of a let-down, but they knew they were being shit-canned and had pretty much used up the material but for me, series 4 is the best thing I've ever watched.

Bunk Moreland is a fucking legend too.

Edit: details.
Absolutely agree. The quality of the first 4 series and the depth they built to the characters and the storylines made the 5th season such a disappointment. The whole storyline behind the 5th series was just so implausible it was a bit uncomfortable to watch.

It's funny because I remember after the first episode I remember having to force myself to watch the next as it seemed a bit of a slow burner, and then about halfway through the first series I realised "fuck, this is good". Then had a fair break before the second series and found the same thing but so glad I stuck with it, superb TV.

Game of Thrones. Fucking amazing, so refreshing to watch something that isn't completely predictable (unless you've read the books I guess 8) )

Agreed. I'm still behind on the books atm and to be honest not sure if I want to catch up - the books are still a great read and the unpredictability makes the show.

The Wire is the only show I deemed worthy enough to invest the time of watching in it's entirety (albeit I don't like television, much).

Upon finishing it, I fell depressed for a couple days and wished I could forget it all and watch it anew.

I know no show can even approach The Wire's realm of brilliance so there's no point of ever watching another TV series again; strictly sports, movies, and the odd documentary.

Series as good as (or close to) The Wire:

Game of Thrones
Seasons 1 & 2 of Dexter
True Detective
Homeland
Seasons 1, 2 & 3 of Battlestar Galactica

Then you can't have know it's brilliance...

The consensus is 'The Sopranos' is the only show comparable in terms of realism, social impact, and intrigue - although I've never watched it.

The problem is a lot of these shows last 50+ hours; that's a lot of time to invest/waste watching TV.

Season one was good, but they should have killed a certain character at the end of it. It became obvious and predictable after that.
