Topgoon would like to be enthusiastic about this possible signing but 2 things get in the way, one Fox are full of sh*t, quelle supris for a |Murdoch vehicle and two I am not 100% sure Carvalho is the type of defensive midfielder we really need. But 9/10 to Arsene if true as it would mean he really was just being tight till we could afford it.....Topgoon reserves the right for a bit of cynicism.
Why is Topgoon not 100% sure Carvalho is the type of defensive midfielder we need?

Personally I don't think there's a better defensive midfielder in the market.

OBG also thinks Carvalho would be a most excellent signing - not just for the player himslef who could do a very decent job as DMF, but would be another staement of intent form AW.

Just nor seen enough of him that's all,not a slight on the player but Topgoon is willing to accept everyone else's opinion on him if they say he's that good.

Has anybody actually seen much of him? They weren't even in Europe last year and he played a game and a half in a mess of a team at the World Cup so unless you spend your spare time watching the Portuguese Pub League surely everyone is just basing their opinion of him on other people and stuff like Youtube clips?

Me? No.

Many others on here? Yep. They've watched all his games for Sporting Lisbon and Portugal. And had him in their teams on FIFA and Football Manager

I honestly don't know how some posters on here find the time to watch seemingly limitless hours of foreign footy. Don't get me wrong; I'd love it as a day job. Unfortunately my actual one gets in the way.

Admittedly haven't seen much of the lad but his skillset is exactly what we need for the DM position and he seems to be very highly rated, hence the hefty asking fee.

Exactly. Bar the latter stages of the CL I watch zero foreign football, I know that's not the same for everyone but it amazes me how some people seem to have a definitive, informed opinion of any player we're linked with.

On a serious note I've actually been to watch a Primeira Liga game. Nacional (Madeira) at home to Benfica and the home stands were filled with at least 60% 'fans' wearing Benfica colours. Good atmosphere and entirely different from anything I've been to before but Nacional looked like a bunch of part-timers and were rolled over by an exceptionally unimpressive Benfica. Scarily that Nacional team actually qualified for Europe.

It's a terrible league, both Porto and Benfica were unbeaten last year until the penultimate game where they met each other for the second time that season.

After watching the game against Monaco, Topgoon feels the need to re emphasise we badly need a DM. I would add and a defensive coach but what's the point. :x

TG would be 100% correct. Green Gooner also thinks Campbell deserves to be given a chance , I hope Wenger will use him.

on playing Wilshere as a holding midfielder…
No, because we played only with one holding midfielder here and Wilshere and Ramsey pushing on. He has made his claim - we have seen that again.

on signing another holding midfielder…
We have Flamini and last year we played with Arteta and Ramsey in many games in that position. So it’s just a question. I think Jack is getting better and his ankle is good now but it needs games. At the top top level you need presence and consistent presence. In and out is finished today, that you rest for three weeks and you come in and fit a game - that doesn’t work anymore.
Hmm... Doesn't look too good about signing a DM... Hopefully he'll continue to prove us wrong in the transfer market.

After watching the game against Monaco I feel Arsenal will fall short when up against the big teams in the league this season.
I know the Emirates Cup is a friendly and we didn't play our strongest team etc etc but neither did any of the others and we still couldn't beat a decent team when asked.
Without more investment to the squad we won't be contenders. We're close but not close enough.
