i feel like he's been retired a long time too - despite seeing his goals on the MLS shows.

imho he was one of four very special players that i was lucky enough to see regularly in the flesh - Brady, Wright, Bergkamp and TH4. Overmars was up there too, but only two seasons wasn't enough really - probably the greatest winger in modern football surely ?

can you just imagine what a young Henry, Bergkamp and Overmars would do to the prems wobbly defences today ????

They'd have their lower legs remodelled on a regular basis by 'good boys' who 'aren't that sort of player' and the media would say that you have to kick Arsenal because 'they don't like it'.

Good to hear and BFG4 too - just Augie who's still lobbying FIFA to allow a 33rd team in the World Cup then :D

I've been showing my 9 year old son the DVD's of the great Arsenal teams and players and when he watched the 2002 and 2004 seasons he was awestruck. Thought DB10 and THBW14 were the greatest players ever. Reckoned he'd never seen anything like it since. And wanted to know why we don't still play like that. I just sat there... :|

Totally agree with you , a legend but never had the passion that Ian Wright showed or showed it in a different way .
Don't agree with that at all; look at some of his celebrations against Spurs and his passion is evident.

Also, as you pointed out, passion can be displayed in different ways. Bergkamp was one of the most emotionally neutral, reserved players I've ever seen, but you can guarantee he loves Arsenal more than most.

P.S.

Thierry was on a different echelon to Wright ability wise.

Not when it came to putting the ball into the net, he wasn't!! Henry may have been a better all round player but Wrighty was without doubt more clinical when it came to taking chances.

Don't agree there, maybe early on when Henry's striker's nous wasn't fully developed, but after he mastered his craft he was as clinical as they come - no one could pass the ball in the net like him.

Thierry has 4 Golden Boots for a reason, Wright has zilch.

Wright carried the team in front of a midfield of Selley , Morrow , Hillier , Jensen and Jimmy Carter. Quite a difference in supply line.

I agree that Henry was a better player, but Wright wasn't playing in a great team, like Henry had. Hearing Henry talk today, it still pisses me off that he left when he did. In his 8 years at the club, he either won or a trophy or made a cup final every year. For a player with that much success, it angers me that he left. It wasn't like he was leaving having won fuck all at the club. Still a legend though, and hope he comes back to the club as manager some day.

to be fair though, in European terms he was wasted under wenger. only when he went to Barca did he get a CL medal. for his quality, he should of have 3 like Ronaldo or Messi/Ronaldinho.

I think he knew in 2006 that our star was waning, the Famous Five gone, Paddy gone, Bergkamp retired, Pires to be sold....

i felt no bitterness or resentment to him, fabregas or clichy, rvp or nasri. they left to win things. Paddy neither, as we later learned it was wongas decision to sell him and keep fabregas.

btw - fab has not said a word about wenger during the 'crisis'...interesting.

Yes, and we'd already started to regress by the time Henry left too - he must have seen the writing on the wall. Pires (one of his closest friends at the club) had been shown the door for having the audacity to turn 30, Bergkamp had retired, Vieira had gone, Ljungberg was past it... the moment was gone, and in my opinion, it was time for Henry to move on. I remember at the start of the 2007/08 season, many fans (and possibly some players) were saying that Henry's departure had taken a weight off the team, as they no longer felt a) in his shadow, or b) the need to feed every single play through him. And we put together a pretty decent title run that year, much better than the 2006/07 season.

Don't get me wrong - Henry is my favourite player of all-time, and what he did for us in those eight years was incredible, but by 2007, I felt he was past his prime and that both Arsenal and Henry would've benefited if they went their seperate ways.

It will pain me to see him on Sky:

a) a constant reminder that we no longer have players like that
b) having to listen to him debate with tosspots such as Neville, Carragher and Redknapp
c) he'll be defending Wenger left, right and centre, watering down the respect I have for him

Agreed Henry was the better all round player but Ian Wright was a better finisher in a worse team and i loved his enthusiasm and complete joy of scoring for Arsenal and will always be my favourite :barscarf:

I couldn't choose between Wrighty and Henry, but my all time favorite player is Pires.

Of course, like Bergkamp , TH was a genius....I am truly thankful for watching him (and DB) do great and amazing things. Incredible player and worthy of every plaudit he gets. Perhaps it's just my generation but Wrighty will never be eclipsed in my humble opinion - he carried us more than he ever needed to. Still, what a legacy when you have had Wright, Henry and DB10...it's all opinon. Thank you Mr Henry

I have so much man love for the bloke. Saw him in so many games but the one I'll never forget was against the bin dippers in 2004, after the CL and FA cup exit, he came out at half time and saved our season and made a laughing stock of what was then one of the best defences in the league. Me and Chippy Jnr were about 10 yards away from the goal where he left Carragher et al on their arses and I turned to him and said remember that moment cos you won't see anything better live. He still remembers. 8) 8)
