Stefan Schwarz - your memories
Hello there.
I'm writing an article about Stefan Schwarz (it's a kind of Where Are They Now? thing) and I want to get fans' memories about him as a player. Any memories/stories you have - good or bad - please post them here. Doesn't even have to be a story/memory as such, could just be your general view on his time at Highbury. Also any personal memories/anecdotes you have of meeting him/seeing him around - stuff like that.
I'd want to use some of the your quotes for the article, which will appear on the Yahoo Football website next week. So if you don't want your comments to be used then let me know, and they won't be.
I should point out I'm not an Arsenal fan, I'm actually a Hammer. Feel free to abuse me for this!
Cheers,
Kevin

My memory is of a very decent footballer with a good shot on him. I think he was one that got away and could have been a major star for us.
Story I heard was his wife hated London and that's why he left.

You're doing the article on the wrong Super Swede as far as I can make out
Anyway the defining moment of his time at Arsenal surely has to be that free kick at the death in Sampdoria to force extra time in the CWC semi final. That was an unbelievable night, 5 all on aggregate, Seaman's straight arm penalty save was outstanding.
No mention of the final that followed though please

That's the story that went round. And more than a few people raised an eyebrow when he ended up in Sunderland.

Good player whom I never really warmed to.
Re: Stefan Schwarz - your memories
Better than Ian Selly, David Hillier and John Jensen...the midfielder's who were at the club when he arrived. The Vladimar Petrovic if the '90's

Re: Stefan Schwarz - your memories
Even though we got to the Cup Winners Cup Final 1994/95 was a grim season. Turgid football, Mersons drug and alcohol problems, the old guard looking like they'd lost their spirit and desire but if there was one positive it was Stefan Schwarz (and the goal scoring of Ian Wright who pretty much dragged us out of being involved in a relegation battle that year).
Very strong in the tackle and a tidy footballer. Remember him scoring a peach against Everton at Goodison Park in the closing minutes and of course the free kick against Sampdoria to take the tie to extra time when Sampdoria were pretty much thinking they were through.
I was only 9 years old at the time so my view of him may be clouded slightly but I did really like him and was disappointed he wanted to leave so soon after having a good season. Would have been interesting to see if he could have played a David Platt type role in Wengers early years at the club.

Re: Stefan Schwarz - your memories
He was a decent player but slightly wasted in a-last-days-of George Graham team. If he'd stayed he may have gone on to be a big part of the late-90s Arsenanl but one season was probably enough for him in that team and that season. I do remember that when George Graham was asked who he remind him of, he replied: "A young Robert Redford." Those were in the days when Arsenal signed outfield players during the summer.
Re: Stefan Schwarz - your memories
got sent of against Spuds if I remember rightly,he was the sort of player we'd been craving, hard tackling and could use the ball,i was a bit gutted when he left,to me it felt like we hadn't lived up to his expectations, imagine that Arsenal not delivering what they promised

schwarz was a decent player, more technically gifted than the other plums running about our midfield back in the day. scored a quality goal v sampdoria, which isn't remembered as much as it should be, because it's one of our best goals in europe.
but at the end of the day, he was nothing special really. not that comparable to vladdy, because vladdy was a more attacking player, but a lightweight on the ball who would disapear for games, after producing the odd masterclass performance. stefan was more of a steady eddie bloke. a bit of an arteta if you will
