Re: THE WENGER THREAD
LOL
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I do respect Wenger for everything he did for Arsenal up until around 2007/8. After that, totally unacceptable. If he leaves at the end of this season having won the league, in the media it'd be overall positively. Although many will not forget the European failure and the lost decade. Personally a PL title will never make up for the numerous thrashings and CL failure, but it will add to his nostalgia for many.
Really interesting piece on Wenger's thoughts on the succession at Arsenal. He's addressed the idea that he could stand down for Pep, and claims having 3-year managers might not be a bad thing. Interesting. He skeins that finding his successor "won't be his job" - though we all realise this is bollocks.

Fuck sake lets not get all teary and sentimental about it. Hes finished with us. (Well, me anyway)
Has been for ten years. Im afraid I cant get all emosh about him because HES STILL HERE. Still harming us, still not trying everything, using all his resources and then some to win us titles. Still playing project Wenger, still robbing us blind. Still living off past glories. The cowardly fraud.

He was that good
He took a defence that was starting to fail under graham( even rioch steadied the ship in that respect) and gave them a new lease of life
He built the side that went unbeaten but it was towards the end of the 07/08 season where hubris took over and he became Canute like in his failure to adapt with what was needed
He deserved a period to put that right after what he had achieved at the start but to my mind that has gone on over 4 years too long and he should hav been sacked after failing to prepare properly for the 11/12 season after a poor finish to 10/11
To my mind ancelotti should have been installed when he was out of work and reluctant to leave london
But I won't have this slating of everything wenger
He was the right man for the job for over 11 years he just ain't now
And no I am not having that either - he took over THE best back 4 in world football at that time (the Milan defence came close but were not as good imo) and he also had the best player ever to play for our club to build a team around. He added some real stars (PV4, petit, overmars and anelka) but it shouldn't be forgotten who turned us into a double winning side in 98 - after a dismal defeat against Blackburn, it was TA6 and the back 4 that called the meeting and laid things on the line for our centre midfielders and Bergkamp, on what they needed to do in order for us to win the league. Even back in his first successful season, it was his players that were making the key changes to our tactics

Re: THE WENGER THREAD
Everyone seems to going on about having 200 million to spend, others say 100 million.
Regardless of whether it's 100 or 200, De Maria with wages cost 150 million, that's it, gone.
So, question, would you have been happy with us signing De Maria and him turning out to be rather average?
Would you all say what a wanker he was for wasting all the money?
Just a question so no need to get all tetchy cos the last few replies had me sleepless

The straw clutching for excuses and attempts at deflecting blame is embarrassing and wumlike lefty
Singling out Di Maria. You could just as easily referenced an actual player he tried (well I dont believe he ever wanted him) Suarez. And his pathetic, insulting +1 bid. Would that have worked? No one knows about that either. Why cause it didnt happen fs.
Wumlike. I' ve made a new word.

Re: THE WENGER THREAD
Your attempts at praising Wenger for past glories and desperately searching for excuses for his current failings while at the same time claiming you want him gone is a bit confusing and seem wumlike to me Im afraid. (Although maybe thats because Im not "sensible" enough for you) Whats with the silly hypothetical question about Di Maria? Whats the point of that anyway fs? What are you trying to prove?LeftfootlegendGooner wrote:I'm neither a wum or straw clutching nomarkchair I'm posing a question but please let a sensible person answer so move along childarmchair wrote:The straw clutching for excuses and attempts at deflecting blame is embarrassing and wumlike lefty![]()

If we had signed Di Maria, and if he had turned out to be poo, why would anyone be happy with the end result? It seems a bit of a strawman argument, because we didn’t sign him.LeftfootlegendGooner wrote:Everyone seems to going on about having 200 million to spend, others say 100 million.

We did, however, dole out contracts north of £50k to such luminaries as: Legohead; Peanuthead; Park; Eboue; Djourou; Chamakh; Bendtner; the Kilngon and in fact there are too many to mention.
So rather than hypothetically blame Wenger for wasting money on one overpriced dosser, I’ll blame him for actually wasting a king’s ransom on myriad wastrels for years and years.

Classic. £200m is turned into a magical sum that is "not that much really"LeftfootlegendGooner wrote:Everyone seems to going on about having 200 million to spend, others say 100 million.

And of course, use the most extreme example in Di Maria the £63m flop

A list of players that could have been signed for less fee/wages:
Suarez (£40m +1 eh?)
Lewandowski
Benzema
Griezmann
Reus
Hummels
Kroos
Lukaku
Isco
Rakitic
Cavani
Higuain
Every single one of these players could have been signed for around £50m and there's no way they'd command the £250k a week ADM did. Not one of them would have earned anywhere near that. But of course, better to use one extreme example of a big money signing, instead of looking at, you know...Aguero...Silva...Hazard...Sanchez etc etc.
So desperate a defence of Lord Wenger!

We also ALL know that the premiership pays a premium for players because of the huge TV revenues.
If the premiership wanted Messi he would be on 500,000 PLUS A WEEK.
As for some numpty evoking the oh so classic "strawman argument" on online gooner, my question is still relevant, we could sign 3 players whose fee and wages exceed 300 million and yet might fail, regardless of what player it is.
De Maria was just an example of what a premier league team have to pay for top players and AGAIN YOU ALL KNEW THAT, crack on boys because I haven't seen a valid reply yet

Anyhow I'm off for an hour in the hot tub so I might not see you replies through the steam, just as well going by what I've seen so far

Re: THE WENGER THREAD
So let's get that right:
Suarez never wanted to come to Arsenal (musta imagined his public plea and that £40+1 bid)
Griezmann couldn't have been signed for 20m from Sociedad, but oil-money Atletico (wage bill on par with Stoke) could.
In turn, we defo couldn't get Griezmann off Atletico now. (Ignores teams nicking Diego Costa etc)
Lukaku defo wouldn't have joined a CL club in London. No, always dreamt of Everton.
Godin couldn't have been pinched from Atletico. Uh huh.
Reus wouldn't leave Euro football-less Dortmund as, again, Dortmund never sell their top players.
Hummels, like Reus, wouldn't join wee Arsenal.
Isco, who has been agitating for a move from Real, wouldn't join us either.
Super. Ok, great thanks for clearing that up
