THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

In fairness its the same retort you get from many Gooners if you dont agree with their point of view, AKB or WOB. Sad state of affairs if you ask me. Shows how divisive our lords occupation has become.

I wondered when you'd wheel out this old chestnut, the last bastion of the idiot. Please give it a rest as you are making yourself look a rather silly idiot.

Just have to bump this.
Puts the rest of turricanes ridiculous excuses for Wenger into some kind of perspective. Its right up there with "we didnt beat Chelsea at home this season because the weather was rotten"

Red Member was banned for less than this.

Im not an AKB but.....

@DB10GOONER:

Nice to have a bit of balance on here - appreciated. (But Hitler jokes in this day and age, really?)

A stat I thought was interesting was that there are 7 points between us in fourth and Man City at the top, which is exactly the same number of points between us in fourth and Everton in *fifth*. The top four block really seemed to pull away in the last few matches of the season, and we were up there with them with a respectable bunch of results in those matches - a time when both LFC and Everton started to falter. The reason we faced Wigan in the FA Cup semi was because they knocked City out in the quarters, so if people want to argue that the squeaky-bum situation in that semi was a failing on our part, they should really bear that in mind.

@northbank123: You may not appreciate the sentiment re:Chelsea, but you yourself said in another post that Lampard "let us off" by hitting the bar, whereas Giroud's miss was a result of his being "a carthorse" - with all due respect, that sounds halfway to the kind of thing a Chelsea supporter would say.

The "old chestnut", as someone put it, is I think a fair one. I just read a bunch of posts in favour of the idea that we get a Russian oligarch to buy the club outright, install a manager who'll play consistently dull football in the name of squeaking a league trophy and give him £200m for transfers. There's already one London club which does that - and they are almost universally loathed. Do we really need another one, least of all the one we support?

I swear, it's like the lads in infants' school (in south London, no less) calling me a "durr-brain" for supporting Arsenal rather than Liverpool, because LFC "won all the time".

When we pipped Liverpool to the League title in 1989, Graham had to come out of his comfort zone tactically, by playing a defensive sweeper system in the first half (which did close Liverpool down to some extent, but didn't give us much chances), then switching to a more aggressive 4-4-2 during the second half in which we scored twice (though very late in the case of the second goal). In short, even under Graham we didn't just aim to go one up, then stick two buses on the pitch like Mou did against LFC a few weeks ago - we actually had to come out and play for it. Far from "boring, boring Arsenal", that match is still considered one of the best and most exciting televised games of the era. See also the second leg of the Littlewoods Cup semi-final against Spurs in 1987 (which I remember taping and getting up two hours before school the next day so I could watch it).

This season, of the seven matches against the other top-four finishers we lost three of them, and beat Liverpool twice - so the idea that we can't beat any of them with the current set-up just doesn't hold water.

I think though the solution is somewhere in between the two. These extreme generalisations are just that; generalisations. Many AKB’s say people that want Arsene gone also want to be like the Chavs (dull, overly pragmatic and pimped by a rich criminal) and many Gooners that want Arsene out tend to tar the AKB’s with the brush that says “they’d rather play pretty footy with Arsene and win nothing just like the Scum”.

There are people in those extreme groups I suppose, but not the majority. The truth is there is a middle ground, a happy medium. It doesn’t have to be one or the other extreme. I don’t want Arsenal pimped to a scumbag billionaire, I don’t want Arsenal playing deadly dull chav style football. Similarly I don’t want Arsenal playing pretty tippy tappy football and winning fuck all.

I want Arsene gone as his ideas are stale and too intractable. I want a new manager to try new ideas. He might succeed, he might fail. Who knows. But to my mind Arsene has failed since 2008. He’s had enough time to get it right and he’s failed. I love him and respect him but I want him gone.

I kinda missed jd and his arrogant superfan preaching and talking down to us mere mortals. Not!
Not to mention his blind, ridiculous Wenger defence and apportioning blame elsewhere, anywhere and everywhere.

Fair enough - how's that? He *does* play defensive and counter-attacking styles, even if it isn't his preferred strategy, and he *does* alter playing style mid-match if necessary - not doing these things are two criticisms I've heard levelled that aren't true.

What else?
But to my mind Arsene has failed since 2008. He’s had enough time to get it right and he’s failed.
He's only had a transfer budget worthy of the name since August 2013, and the market in those windows was not very inspiring. For example, I hear people giving AW stick over Higuain, but Higuain has only managed two more league goals than Giroud this season, and Higuain is not the kind of pacy striker who'd make a difference - at best he's somewhere between a Giroud and a Walcott in that regard.
