Which defeat hurt you the most?
Re: Which defeat hurt you the most?
99 semi and the defeat at Leeds was the worst I've felt although after Leeds me and my mate consoled ourselves in various nightclubs. 1980 was the 1st time I cried after games as losing 2 finals and then Brady leaving was hard for a 9 year old to take. 2001 cup final was another bitter pill and being surrounded by gloating scousers on the M4 was hard to stomach. 2004 defeat to Chelsea was another kick in the balls too.

I am a pessimist. I expect defeats - especially in big games very often. So these defeats doesn´t hurt me very much mostly, for example I expected that we would lose the 2006 CL final...
The last time I thought we would win, but lost in a big game / final was:
1. May 17 2000 in Copenhagen vs. Galatasaray
2. Feb 27 2011 at Wembley vs. Birmingham
3. May 10 1995 in Paris vs. Zaragoza
4. April 6 2004 at Highbury vs. Chelsea

FA cup final defeat to Owens late goals.

You're both right. Valencia knocked us out twice - the QF in 2001 and the second group stage in 2003. Carew scored both times.Deise Gooner wrote:Wasnt that in the Second Group Phase that was in place back thenTheCook wrote:Yeah, lost on away goals after he scored in the 2nd Leg : I think that was one of our best chances to win it ; Would have been Leeds in the semi final too.highburyJD wrote: There was a CL KO v Valencia I remember particularly gutting me,
Carew I think...
My worst ever were '99 FA Cup semi final replay ; I needed 3 years to get over that (til we beat Chelsea in '02), and '06 in Paris v Barca, even though it is still the best away trip ever. I am still not over that defeat, and what increases the pain is the knowledge we are further away from that trophy than we have been for 15 years.I seem to recall it was but i could be wrong. All i remember from the game is Bobby getting booked for a dive late on

In recent memory I would say the Carling cup final v Birmingham, nailed on favourites eventually going to get a trophy and we f**ked it up along with our remaining games

Re: Which defeat hurt you the most?
by the start of 2004 i thought no one in the world would be able to beat us that season - sort of a similar feeling i had with brazil in the mid 90s, you just start the game knowing the final outcome - so when we lost to chelsea in the CL with a goal from that fucknugget bridge i was indeed upset.
but nothing will beat barcelona in '06 for me. bergie on the bench, the last chance to give him a trophy he deserved so much, would be the cherry on the top of the perfect career. will never get past that, stings to this day.
