Wenger - We were close to signing Ronaldo

Arsène Wenger has revealed Arsenal were "very close" to signing Cristiano Ronaldo before he moved to Manchester United in 2003.

The Portuguese winger is having a superb season and leads the Premier League scoring charts with 19 goals. Overall the 22-year-old has 54 strikes in 149 games for Sir Alex Ferguson's side - a great ratio from midfield. But he so nearly plied his exciting trade at Emirates Stadium.

"I knew about him yes," said Wenger at Friday's pre-match press conference. "We were very close. Manchester United had a partnership with Sporting Lisbon when Carlos Queiroz came in - that made the difference.

"One day I will tell you more about that story and you will be surprised. But you will have to ask him how close it was."

Wenger's own striker, Emmanuel Adebayor, is the nearest challenger to Ronaldo in the scoring charts with 16. The Arsenal manager was surprised to see that particular pair so far clear at the top.

"I expected Rooney to be in there, also Owen but he was injured," said Wenger. "I am not surprised too much that Adebayor scores more goals, but I did not expect Ronaldo to score as many as he has because he plays on the wing.

"Someone asked me in an interview today what is the difference between Ronaldo and Messi? For me it is the goals. Messi is more of a dribbler in a very short space, but Ronaldo is good in the air, good on free-kicks, right foot, left foot. He has developed very well."

why is it that Wenger is percieved to be a wizard at developing youth yet compared to SAF ..he fails

Rooney> Theo
Roanldo>bednter
Nani>Reyes
Giggs/scholes beckham> cole, ermmm?
See why you're a moron? Or maybe you knew nothing about football till 2 yrs back maybe.

SAF developed Rooney? Irrespective of your moronic logic that he was bought with the money you got for Beckham, hes free, the guy had a 26 million price tag on him. You dont have a 26 million price tag on a undeveloped unproven youngstar. Everyone saw him in the Euros. If anyone is responsible for Rooneys development its David Moyes, irrespective of what shrek has to say about Moyes. Theo was bought from a championship side and he wasnt proven in top flight English football. Where is the similarity here?

Ronaldo was hardly an unknown player when Ferguson signed him, he was one of the brightest prospects of Portuguese football. And funny how you compared Ronaldo with Bendtner, when theres a certain Theirry Henry created by Wenger  .

Neither Nani or Reyes were unknown unproven players. Nani like Ronaldo have been one of Portugal's brightest talents. Its a well known fact that Rafa Benitez was after him as well. So surely Ferguson hasnt developed him into the player he is. Besides he has a long way to go.

Giggs/Scholes/Beckham = cole ermm?

Have you heard of names like Patrick Viera, Cesc Fabregas, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy, players you hadnt even heard of before they played for Arsenal.

You moron :).

We may be the same faces and we probably do spend too much time on here, and we are probably all saddos for it - but we are all Arsenal supporters and this is an Arsenal website. Surely you can see your points getting less and less defensible with every passing day. Now do us all a favour and fuck off.
