THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Ooooooohhh shirty ! When he plays a full season for us rather than some provincial one season wonders from France currently rooted to the bottom of our pathetic CL Group, then by all means come back and have a bash. Until then he's being kept out of the side as a central striker by the one and only Gervinho - does that tell you something ?

Can anyone else beat our proud trophy winning record:

Arsenal FC - The 3rd and 4th place virtual trophy winners 2006-2012
It surely, won't be long, till we start celebrating this outstanding feat, outside Islington Town Hall complete with an open top bus parade.... :banghead:

the playing mantis wrote:the media crapon about how good he is in the transfer market, and can spot talent and polish it. is he? really? the amount of shite he has signed, both for good money and cheap is huge. sure hes signed some crakers but so have most other managers. i would like someone with the time and inclination to list all his signings and it wouldnt be interesting to judge of those who has been a success, or a failure or inbetween. imo aw's transfer nous has been completly eroded and is now a myth.
I think a better angle to look at it is to list the players that he's bought that HAVE been a success, as this list will be alot shorter imo.

Signing the players is only half of it. Every manager will make a fair share of shit signings (even Ferguson has signed Veron, Djemba-Djemba, Kleberson, Bebe and many other flops), the difference is he'd shift those players on pretty quickly and give them limited game time. Wenger will make an error of judgement then stick by it blindly for years, lumbering us with a player not only soaking up wages but also often hampering us on the pitch.

Much of it is self-imposed, he'd rather spread himself thin in the transfer market and that doesn't help him. If you buy a player for £15-20m you're almost guaranteed of quality of some sort, if you buy three £5m unknowns or gambles one or two might become very good players but equally they could all turn out to be ***** and a drain on the club for years. As we all know, even with the 'restricted funds' available to him he could do far more with it. It was a tactic that paid dividends (sore subject after today) for him early in his reign but since the rest of the world has caught up and many clubs have surpassed us in terms of scouting it is becoming more and more of a gamble, and one that isn't coming off.

Behave  I'll always have a soft spot for Wreh. And he was our 4th choice striker back then. I'd probably have him as 1st choice at the moment
