Now if you could just point the cannon the other way & make the Flemirates logo go vamoose that’d be just dandy.
Why do are people so hung up on the way the cannon is facing? It always seems to be brought up that somehow because the current cannon is facing East it is against our tradition. But reading this from Wikipedia it's clear that that is a load of rubbish.
Unveiled in 1888, Royal Arsenal's first crest featured three cannons viewed from above, pointing northwards
Perhaps then if we want to preserve our traditions the correct way would be to have the cannon facing upwards?
This was dropped after the move to Highbury in 1913, only to be reinstated in 1922, when the club adopted a crest featuring a single cannon, pointing eastwards, with the club's nickname, The Gunners, inscribed alongside it
So going by this, the crest that we had at Highbury was actually facing East not West, and as this was the crest that is most similar to the one today, perhaps the correct way is actually to face East if you're talking about preserving tradition.
The bottom line is that our crest has changed a lot over our history with it first facing up north, and then eastwards, so it's wrong to say that just because it's been changed again that it is somehow going against tradition. There hasn't been just one design that has now suddenly changed, its been revised and altered several times, sometimes not even having a cannon at all, so i really don't understand it when people say that the "cannon is facing the wrong way".
