Mainly because, whether he's a good signing or not MIGHT hinge on the future of Nasri and Cesc. IF both stay, then Gervinho is just another option in attack and that's great... but IF Nasri and Cesc go, then we're going to need READY MADE world class replacements, or we'll have downgraded, surely?
I think its a case of adding quality to the squad.
We only had Nasri, Theo and AA23 to play in the attacking wide roles. If one's injured then we were fucked. The alternatives were Rosicky or........Bendtner.
Gervinho kills Bendtner. So that's a thumbs up in my book!

Yes, but signing £10m+ SQUAD players is hardly a priority IF we lose Nasri and Cesc, is it?
HOWEVER, if Nasri & Cesc stay then I'd saying adding an attacker to the SQUAD makes perfect sense.
I'm just saying that the context of signing Gervinho changes massively depending on the futures of Nasri and Cesc... therefore it's always going to be difficult for Arsenal to plough on and spend their budget without sorting out the future of Cesc and Nasri first - after all, our priorities surely change dramatically depending on whether they stay or go!

I am afraid that it looks like Gervinho is on his way to us.SSN are reporting that Lille have just signed a striker!!!
Just what we need.Another 15 goal a season wannabe, who will stay with us for a season or two to build his profile, flatter to deceive for half a season, then fuck off somewhere else!!!

The context of signing Gervinho changes massively depending on the futures of Nasri and Cesc!... or at least, it does to me.
I agree, another attacking midfielder wasn't high on my wish list either.
I think they're staying. If anything this maybe the first of many which would appease Nasri.
I'ld say though that he's someone who is actually comfortable playing in the position he will play i.e. wide of a 3 up front. Nobody else looks comfortable in that role.
I think the Chamberlain deal could just be a case of sorting out paper work etc.

I hope so, and if that's the case then I'd welcome the signing of another attacking midfielder, as we need more options to break teams down.
And yes, perhaps opening the chequebook will convince Nasri we have some ambition.... although, until he signs, I'm always going to be dubious about signings of this nature.
That said, regardless of the future of Nasri and Cesc, I'd welcome a major signing at centre back as that's so far beyond essential it's now just ridiculous! - same with a left back, as I'd love to see Clichy shipped out... but only if he can be replaced. He's bad BUT I'm still a little scared we could do much much worse

Assuming Everton would sell... assuming we'd pay the premium for signing an English player... assuming his wage demands fit within our current structure... and assuming we're not gazumped by bigger spenders than ourselves like Citeh, Liverpool, Sp*rs or Barnet
