Hello Gooners, im a new member here so go easy on me...until i settle in at least.

im a guitarist and i love classical guitar and shredding. there's some real good stuff on guitar idol, if anyone has come across that? check out players like Gustavo Guerra or Marc Playle.

Just watched Hendrix play Isle of Wight on Arts channel.....love him or hate him the guy could play guitar

Even though I always say he has been surpassed technically by most 14 year old shredders on youtube, I still just love watching Hendrix's live performances. It's like the guitar is a part of him. Man was a genius. Proves it ain't all about the technique.

Totally agree ive seen him at the Monterrey festival too its fascinating just to watch him

Have to agree with all that's been said about innate ability and a 'feel' for the guitar surpassing technique etc, kind of reminds me of classically trained players who don't know how to 'Jam'...weird but some/many just can't do it, it's as if they need a formal structure to follow or else.....

Years ago I was very influenced by the neo-classical technique of the late great Randy Rhoads (RIP). I studied every single thing the man wrote, I learned to play every single riff and solo. I was so fascinated by his blend of heavy metal and classical guitar I bought books and studied classical theory and technique. I dedicated years to getting that stuff down tight. And similarly when the new shredders like Vai and Malmsteen introduced advance techniques to metal like sweep picking, legato and alternate picking I learned that stuff.

But it’s true what you say, onebard - you can become so wrapped up in the theory and technique side that you can almost lose the feel, the ability to improvise and just jam. You end up looking for structure where there shouldn’t really be anything that limiting.

It took me a few years to get back to just being really comfortable jamming on spur of the moment stuff.
Hendrix was a master of improvisation. If you watch him closely, no matter what key he plays in, he very rarely looks at the neck for reference points, he’s THAT comfortable with where he is at any given time.

One guitarist I recommend every player should listen to is George Lynch of Dokken. Dokken were a plod average 80's hair metal band whose songs were mostly pretty poor, but they were instantly lifted by Lynch's playing. Lynch has an amazing technique and an innate sense of melody - just an amazing player and waaaaay too good for his band!

they were one of the best heavy metal/glam metal bands of all time

My earliest influences on Guitar (from about 7yrs old) were Hendrix and Peter Green (Early F Mac)....but I was always into Soul, Stax and Motown, the rhythm guitarists in many of the Motown recordings (besides the obvious Awesome Bass lines etc) made them soooo 'Catchy' (hooks and all).
I then discovered Sabbafff and Purrple then John Martyn (who was an amazing guitarist,- after a gig one noght back at his hotel him and Danny Thompson did this impromptu thing in tyhe bar - no vocals just playing - jazz and folk mix - Awesome)/ Neil Young/ Joni Mitchell/CSN&Y etc/Yes/Floyd/ George Benson/ Al Di Meola jazz(trad and fusion)...so love all kinds of guitar/ists.....But now I most enjoy Acoustic Guitar/ists...Just the sound of a well played acoustic guitar does the trick.....

Randy Rhoades was awesome saw him when Ozzy toured with his 1st album....was the only one - at the time - to come close to fast eddie....one guitarist I could never get into was Rory Gallagher (RIP) - My older brother used to love him, but i just couldn't listen to him..

will give that guy from Dokken a listen though

OH! FECK NO! Don't tell me legohead is learning to play the guitar as well...he's useless at footie and so it naturally follows will be shyte at guitar...
